well as usage. Vocabulary checks the relevance and
appropriateness to the lecture.

Strategies – Be ready
 The Audio Status box will count down from 12
seconds and the audio will begin.
 Be ready to take notes on the Erasable
Noteboard Booklet.
Strategies – Take notes as you listen

 As you listen, take notes of the main and supporting

ideas.
 Don't try to write down everything you hear.
 Use key words, abbreviations, symbols and arrows to
capture the most important ideas and to indicate how
the ideas are organized.
 Effective note-taking will ensure that your summary has
all the main points.
 When the recording stops, look at your notes while the
audio is fresh in your mind.
 Plan how you will present the information.
Strategies – Write your summary
 When the audio stops, you have 10 minutes to write your
summary.
 Use your notes to summarize all the main points and add as
many supporting details or examples as you can.
 Top marks will be gained if all relevant aspects of the audio
are mentioned.
 Keep to the word limit of 50- 70 words, or you will lose
marks.
 Save 2 minutes at the end to check your work for grammar
and spelling: Mistakes will lose marks.

Some tips
 Only important points, keywords should be captured.
 Keywords are words that are stressed/emphasized by
the speaker or something that he/she has specifically
mentioned as important. Names, dates, figures,
number can be a part of this.
 If you miss an important point it is fine. Focus on the
remaining piece.
 Use abbreviated words while taking notes to shorten
time taken.
 Be on the lookout for the overall idea of the lecture and
any connected main ideas.
Some tips
 After the lecture gets over, spend the next
thirty seconds noting down any additional
important content that you can remember
and you will expand upon later.
 It is not realistically possible to cover
everything that would have been said during
the lecture. This is fine. Having few quality
notes can be more useful than many notes
that you can barely make sense of.
Some tips
 If you really had a tough time during the
lecture, as a last resort you can expand upon
the key words of the lecture based on your
general knowledge and views. If you do this,
make sure you broadly stick to content
keywords as much as possible and focus on
writing clean English free of grammatical and
spelling errors.
Some tips
 You are allowed and are encouraged to
paraphrase information using your own
words. While writing your summary use words
that you are confident you can spell correctly.
Avoid using the same word repeatedly. Try
rephrasing or use a synonym that conveys the
same meaning. This will improve vocabulary
score.
Some tips
 Another important point is to make sure you
stay between the given word count (50-70).
The word count will be displayed on screen as
you type.
 Content makes up only 20% of the scoring in
this section, so you would want to give
appropriate importance to grammar,
vocabulary, form and spelling as well.
