“Improving Analytical and

Computational Skills of Second Year


Math Students at Pangasinan State
University Santa Maria Campus using
Cymath”
CHAPTER 1
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY

• Calculus is one of the important branch of mathematics. It is the study of


change and continuity. In STEM, Calculus is already being studied and
learned.
• Strong computational and analytical skills is very essential in any subject like
Calculus especially for STEM Students. In many studies, some students
struggle in this skills. Similar difficulties have been noticed among Second
Year Math Students here in PSU Santa Maria.
• Understanding how important it is to solve this problem, this study intends to
put into practice methods to improve and enhance their mathematical
abilities in solving problems involving Calculus.
• Using Math Applications especially Cymath, it will help them boost their
confidence and to improve their analytical and computational skills in
Calculus.
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEMS
Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the test scores of the respondents before using
Cymath?
2. What is the test scores of the respondents after using
Cymath?
3. Is there any significant difference in the pre test and post test
results of the respondents before and after using Cymath?
RESEARCH HYPOTHESIS
• The study will be anchored on the following hypothesis. It will be
tested in its null form at 0.05 level of significance.
1. There is no significant difference in their pre test and post test
results before and after using Cymath.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION OF THE
STUDY
• This study will be focus on improving the analytical and
computational skills of Second Year Math students in PSU
Santa Maria Campus.
• The respondents of the study will composed of (24) math
students enrolled at PSU Santa Maria located at Santa Maria,
Pangasinan during A.Y 2023-2024.
• The data will be gathered by the use of the scores in their pre
test and post test.

FOREIGN LITERATURE AND STUDIES
• According to Shamir and Feehan (2019), Math Technology or
Math application is essential in improving the skills of the
students.
• Additionally, according to the study of Zhang M. and
others(2015), Math apps can use as an effective intervention to
improve the math skills , particularly for struggling students.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
LOCAL LITERATURE AND STUDIES
• According to Cruz and Dela Cruz(2018), Math application is
very effective in enhancing students’ mathematical proficiency
within the Philippine context and to suggest this to supplement
traditional mathematics instruction in Philippine Schools.
• According to the study of Igcasama R., Kilag O. and Cabonillas
L. (2023), it determines the role of math technology, including
math apps, in improving the mathematical skills of the students.
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
SYNTHESIS OF REVIEWED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
• According to Joe Bealer (2015), Math technology and math
apps can enhance learning skills and promote mathematical
skills for the students.
• The study of Igcasama, Kilag ,and Cabonillas (2023) is related
to the present study since both studies focuses on determining
the effect of math app in improving mathematical skills of the
students.
CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

•This quantitative research will use


experimental research design which is the
pre-test/post-test single group.
POPULATION AND LOCALE OF THE STUDY

•This study will be conducted at Pangasinan State


University Santa Maria Campus for S.Y. 2023-2024.

•The respondents of the study were composed 24


students from Second Year Math A in PSU Santa Maria.

• Purposive Sampling has been used to choose the


respondents for the study.
RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

•The researcher will utilize a pre-test and post-test as the main


instrument in gathering data on determining the significant difference
of the test scores before and after using Cymath of Second Year
Math students at PSU Santa Maria Campus.
The pre test and post test will composed of (25)items.
•The pre-test will focus on the last discussion of antiderivatives in
Calculus 2 before using Cymath.

•The post-test will focus after the discussion of the antiderivatives in


Calculus 2 with the use of Cymath.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

•The researcher will prepare a pre-test and post-test that can answer the
objective of the study. It will be subjected to content validation.

•After validation of the questionnaires, the researchers will send a formal


letter of request to the Campus Executive Director ,Sir. Honorio L.
Cancolas ,dean of the College of Teacher Education of PSU-Sta. Maria, Dr.
Gemma M. De Vera, for permission to conduct the study inside the
campus.
DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE
• After the approval, the researchers will start to conduct the
study. In the first session , the researchers will discuss the
antiderivatives before using the Cymath app.Next, the
researchers will administer a pre test for the last discussion. In
the second session, the research will discuss again the
antiderivatives with the use of Cymath app. Lastly, the
researchers will administer post test for that discussion.
• The gathered data will be tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted.
After that, the conclusion will be drawn and recommendations
will be formulated.
TREATMENT OF DATA
To obtain valid and reliable results, appropriate statistical tools or
test will be utilized.
