Introduction to Spreadsheet

🞅 What is a spreadsheet :-
🞅 A n arrangement of cells in columns a n d rows used to organize,
analyze ,calculate and report information ,usually in numerical form.
Overview of Workbook and
Worksheets

🞅Workbook:
A workbook is a file that contains one or more worksheets. It is typically saved
with a file extension like .xlsx (Excel) or .ods (OpenDocument). A workbook c a n
b e thought of as a binder that holds multiple p a g e s (worksheets).

🞅 Worksheet is a type of Sheet a n d inherits the base Sheet class. The term
Worksheet used in Excel documents is a collection of cells organized in rows a n d
columns. It is the working surface you interact with to enter data. Each worksheet
contains 1048576 rows a n d 16384 columns a n d serves as a giant table that
allows you to organize information. Typically, a workbook contains several
worksheets with related content a n d only one of the worksheets is active at a
time.

🞅 In a relational database, a row, a.k.a. record or tuple, represents a single, implicitly


structured data item in a table. A database table c a n be thought of as
consisting of rows a n d columns. Each row in a table represents a set of related
data, a n d every row in the table has the same structure.
Column

🞅 column may refer to any of the following:1. A column is a vertical series of cells in
a chart, table, or spreadsheet. Below is an example of a Microsoft Excel
spreadsheet with column headers (column letter) A, B, C, D, E, F, G, a n d H. As
you c a n see in the image, the last column H is highlighted in red, a n d the
selected cell (D8), is in the D column.
Cell

🞅 "A cell is the intersection where a row a n d a column meet on a spreadsheet,


starting with cell A1. In the following example, a highlighted cell D8 (column D,
row 8) is shown in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. That designation (D8) is also
known as the cell address or cell reference. Any modifications m a d e while a cell
is highlighted are limited to that specific cell in the worksheet.
Active Cell

🞅 active cell or selected cell c a n b e identified many ways. First, as shown in


the picture a b o v e of Microsoft Excel, the active cell has a bold black box around
the cell. Also, the column a n d row are highlighted. In our example picture, the
column header "D" a n d row header "8" are highlighted in yellow. The active cell
is also shown in the top-left portion of the window (Name box), which is "D8" in
our example.

Saving the Workbook

1. Save the Workbook:

rename it.
Copying A worksheet

C o p y Worksheet:
• Excel:
• Right-click on the worksheet tab at the bottom.
• Select "Move or Copy."
• C h e c k the "Create a copy" box a n d choose where to
place it.
• Click "OK."
• G o o g l e Sheets:
• Right-click on the worksheet tab.
• Select "Duplicate."
Deleting a
Worksheet

delete.
🞅 • Select "Delete."

Closing and Opening a
Workbook

🞅 1. Close the Workbook


🞅 • Excel: Click on "File" > "Close" or simply click the "X" in the top right corner.
🞅 • G o o g l e Sheets: Just close the tab; changes are automatically saved.
🞅 2. O p e n a Workbook:
🞅 • Excel: Click on "File" > "Open," then browse to find your workbook a n d
click "Open."
🞅 • G o o g l e Sheets: G o to Google Drive, find your file, a n d double-click to
o pen it.

🞅 Working with spreadsheets involves understanding the structure of


workbooks and worksheets. You c a n create new worksheets, enter data, save
your work, co py or delete sheets as needed, a n d m a n a g e your files by closing
a n d opening workbooks efficiently. With practice, you'll b e c o m e proficient in
navigating a n d utilizing spreadsheet software for various tasks!
