1.Introduction to Tableau
1.Introduction to Tableau
With interactive visualization, you can take the concept a step further by using technology
to drill down into charts and graphs for more detail, interactively changing what data you
see and how it’s processed.
Humans respond to and process visual data better than any other type of data. In fact, the
human brain processes images 60,000 times faster than text, and 90% of information
transmitted to the brain is visual.
• Visualization allows visual access to huge amount of data in easily digestible visuals.
• Identify areas that need attention or improvement.
• Prediction and data insights
• Timely Information and live data.
How to achieve Data Visualization ?
About Tableau
• Tableau was founded in Mountain View, California in January 2003, by Chris Stolte,
Christian Chabot and Pat Hanrahan.
• Tableau is a powerful and fastest growing data visualization tool used in the Business
Intelligence Industry. It helps in simplifying raw data into the very easily understandable
format.
• Data analysis is very fast with Tableau and the visualizations created are in the form of
dashboards and worksheets. The data that is created using Tableau can be understood by
professional at any level in an organization. It even allows a non-technical user to create a
customized dashboard.
• It allows the customer to spend more time on Data Analysis and less on “data wrangling”.
Why Tableau ?
• Access to Multiple Data Connection
Tableau connects easily to nearly any Data source, be it corporate Data Warehouse,
Microsoft Excel or web-based data.
• Live Analysis
Tableau allows you to connect to your live data and perform various analysis on it.
• Maps
Most tools requires an extreme amount of work to make map data work correctly. Tableau
made it pretty seamless.
• Shelves Section
Tableau is awesome at recommending which visualization to use. Just hitting the Showme
tool from the toolbar menu helps you get best possible suggestion for the selected
Dimension and Measure.
• Speed
• Easy Publishing and sharing
• Beautiful and interactive dashboards.
The great thing about Tableau software is that it doesn't require any technical or any kind
of programming skills to operate. The tool has garnered interest among the people from all
sectors such as business, researchers, different industries, etc
Note: “All features are available in other tools, but not all together in single tool.”

Products of Tableau
• Tableau Desktop is the authoring and publishing tool that is used to create and
share views on Tableau Server
• Tableau Online is hosted in cloud version of SaaS and are browser based tools (no
software installed).
• Tableau Reader is a free application that lets anyone view and interact with
tableau packaged workbooks.
Note: Tableau Desktop and Tableau Online are used to create the visualization and if
you need it to shared among thousands of user you can publish it on Tableau server,
Tableau Reader and Tableau Public.
Tableau – File Types
Tableau .twbx This file format contains the detail of workbook as well as the
Packaged local data used in it. Its purpose is to be share with other
Workbook Tableau Desktop or Tableau Reader.
Tableau .tds The details of the connection used to create the tableau report
Data Source are stored in this file.
Tableau .tde/ .hyp This file contains the data used in .twb file in highly compressed
Data Extract er data format. This file should be refreshed to get the updated
data from the source.
Tableau .tbm These files contain single worksheet that is shared easily to be
Bookmark pasted into other workbooks.
Tableau .tps This file stores the colour preference used across all the
Preference workbooks. It is mainly used for consistent look and feel across
the users.
VIZQL “ A Language for query, analysis and visualization”
VIZQL , is a technology that allows simple drag and drop functions to create sophisticated
visualizations.
Tableau’s Data Engine, a technology that has the to do ad-hoc analysis of millions rows of
data in seconds.
• A traditional analysis tool forces you to analyse data in rows and columns, choose a
subset of your data to present, organize that data into a table, then create a chat from
that table.
• VIZQL skips those steps and creates a visual representation of your data right away,
giving you visual feedback as you analyse. It runs only in background.
