Torsional vibration

Single Rotor System

Let
 = angular twist of the disc from its equilibrium position
T = torque required to produce the twist = 𝐶𝐽𝑙 𝜃

J is the polar moment inertia of the rod =

d = rod dia.
l = rod length
Then the torsional spring constant can be defined as,
Applying D’Alembert’s principle the equation of motion may be written as

So the natural frequency  may written as

Equivalent shaft system of Geared system
The equivalent should satisfy the following two conditions:
1. Kinetic energy ()in both actual system and equivalent system must
be same.
2. Potential/ strain energy ()in both actual system and equivalent
system must be same.

For Condition (1)

A single cylinder oil engine drives directly a centrifugal pump. The
rotating mass of the engine , flywheel and pump with the shaft is
equivalent to the three rotor system as shown in Fig. The mass M.I
of the rotors A,B and C are 0.15, 0.3, 0.09 kg.sq.m. Find the natural
frequency of the torsional vibration. The modulus of rigidity of the
shaft material is 84 kN/sq.m.
