 Avocados 
Where did it originate?

They are thought to have originated in Mexico and Central

and South America. Avocado trees were first planted in
Florida in 1833 and then in California in 1856.
Interesting facts

• Avocados have royal roots. There are reports that avocados were first used
as tributes from townsfolk to local royalty in Mesoamerica 7,000 years ago.
• Avocados are in the same family as cinnamon.
• Half of an average-sized avocado has 4.6 grams of fibre — the most of any
fruit!
• Unlike other fruit, the avocado is the only one that contains heart-healthy
monounsaturated fat.
• An avocado is a fruit? While definitely not sweet, it falls firmly in the fruit-not
the vegetable-family.
Where is it currently grown?

Mexico harvested about 2.4 million tons of avocados in 2021,

making that country the top producer of avocados worldwide.
Why is it grown here?

• Mexico, to be more precise, it is the Mexican state of

Michoacán, where rich volcanic soil, abundant sunshine,
and timely rainfall provide an ideal setting for the
growth of tasty avocados.
• Avocados take a significant amount of resources to
cultivate, since an avocado tree takes between three
and five years before it begins bearing fruit.
What farming methods are
used and why?
Avocado seeds are planted out to a distance of 6 to 12
metres depending on the vigour of variety and its growth
habit. For varieties having a spreading type of growth, a
wider spacing should be given. In areas prone to excess
water, they should be planted on mounds as avocados
cannot withstand waterlogging.
Proper irrigation is a critical part of it’s growth.
How is it eaten?

• While guacamole is arguably the most popular way to

eat avocado, you can also puree and toss with pasta,
substitute for butter or oil in your favourite baked good
recipes, or spread or slice onto sandwiches.
• One of the best, and easy, ways to enjoy avocado is to
eat it by itself.
