What is
Assessment?
Assessment is conducted to
determine whether the learners
know, understand, and are able to
perform knowledge and
competencies required of them.

Kinds of
Assessment
1
1
Formative
Assessment
Assessment is formative when teachers use it to
check on the progress of their students, to see
how far they have mastered what they should
have learned, and then use this information to
modify their future teaching plans (Hughes,
2003).

2
Summative
Assessment
The purpose of summative assessment in the
traditional sense is to evaluate learner
performance usually at the end of the quarter,
term, or year. It provides the teacher an
understanding of how the learners fare against
the set standards in the curriculum.
2
Common Summative
Assessments
• Periodic / Quarterly examinations
• Final project or creative portfolio
• Final performance, demonstration, or
report
• Chapter tests or end-of-unit tests
• Standardized tests (NAT, NCAE, and
others)

3
Traditional
Assessment
These are conventional methods of testing
the understanding or the learners. It
usually produces a written document such
as quizzes, exams, or papers. It also
includes standardized tests or final
examinations.
3
Traditional
Assessment
These tests are popular because of their ease of
use and they instantly provide a numerical
score right after the test. It is also easy to
compare results of groups of learners. However,
they emphasize memorization of concepts over
development of skills.
4
4
Authentic
Assessment
Also called “alternative assessments”,
authentic assessments use activities that
help show what learners can do,
especially with the learnings they have
gained in the lessons. Learners get to take
more responsibility for their learning.
4
Creating Authentic
Assessment
• Identify standards / objectives – statements of what the learners
should do
• Select an authentic task – find a task that can demonstrate their
understanding
• Identify the criteria for the task – clearly stated, brief,
observable, written in the language learners can understand
• Create the rubric for scoring – create a scoring rubric to help
