BEAT FORMAT

STAFF
• This is a musical symbol having a five parallel lines and four spaces.the
lines and spacesconstituting the staf are reered to as”sta
degrees”.eachline and space is considerd to be a degree o the
sta.Pitches are represented by lines and spaces on the staff.
BARS
• 1.single bar-a vertical line dividing the staff into measures.
• 2.double barthese ar two vertical lines at the end o the sta which
signiy the end o the music.

NOTES AND THEIR CORRESPONDING
RESTS
• NOTES:determine the duration of tones to be sounded(played or
sung)while rests denote silence.notes and rests of the same kind have
the same value
• REST:a rest denotes silence in the staff and its duration is the same as
its corresponding note.
Notes classified
• Ascending notes:a group o notes successively increasing pitch.
• Decreasing notes: a group of notes with successively decreasing pitch.
• Contrary moving notes:when notes go in oppsite directions.
• Repeated notes:term is self-explanatory.
• Tie notes:are two or more notes of the same pitch with the tie
sign.only the first note is sung or played.
• Slur:slur are two or more notes o dierent pitches with the tie sign.all
notes are sung are played.
Dotted notes and dotted rests

SINGLE DOT

• A dot ater a note or rest receives one hal the value of the note or rest
it follows.
• In the following examples,the number of beats of the dotted notes
and rest on the left side is equal to the number of beats of the notes
on the right side.
• In a ¾ time signature or example,a quarter note receives one
beat.therefore ,a dotted quarter note will receive one plus one-half or
one and a half beats.
DOUBLE DOTS
• Double dots after a note or rest increase the value of the note or rest
by ¾.in a ¾ time signature for example,a quarter notes receive one
beat.a double dot after a quartera quarter note will receive ¾
beat.therefore,a quarter note with a double dot will receive a total of
one and 3/4beats.
• In the following illustrations,the number of beats of the dotted notes
and dotted rests,on the left hand side is equal to the number of beats
of the notes on the right hand side.
GROUPING OF NOTES
• Duplet-is a group of two notes played in time of three of the same
kind.
• Triplet-is a group of three notes played in time of two o the same
kind.sometimesa triplet is written as
• Quadruplet-is a group of four notes played in time of three of same
kind.
• Quintuplet or quintolet-is agroup of five notes played in time of four
or three of the same kind.
• Sextuplet or sextolet-is a group of six notes played in time o four of
the sam kind.
• Septuplet or septoletor septimole-is a group os seven notes played in
time of six or eigt of the same kind.
G-clef and F-clef
• Clef-is a symbol placed at the beginning of each staff which indicates
what pitches are to be represented by the lines and spaces.

• The first seven letters of the alphabet (A,B,C,D,E,F,and G)are used to


represent what pitches are to be used on the lines and spaces of the
staves.
