What is a renewable
energy resource?
What is a non-
renewable energy
resource?
Energy resources can be divided into two categories:
Renewable Non-renewable

Depends Non-renewable
Renewable
Fossil Fuels Are Non-Renewable Energy Sources
Crude oil, coal and gas are fossil fuels. They were formed over millions of
years, from the remains of dead organisms. Fossil fuels are non-renewable.
They took a very long time to form, and we are using them up faster than they
can be replaced. Fossil fuels are also finite resources. They are no longer being
made or are being made extremely slowly.
Infinite
Non-Renewable Resources: can only be used once, cannot be
quickly replaced and will eventually run out.

Renewable Energy (Wind): How Does Wind Energy Work?
Review
1. Wind turns the blades (kinetic Energy)
2. This turns the turbine (kinetic Energy)
3. A wire rotates inside a magnet (Kinetic Energy)
4. And produces an electric current (Electrical Energy)
EXT ONLY: Which size of the blade is better from the three shown above and why?
Task 2: List the advantages and disadvantages of using Wind Energy
ADVANTAGES: DISADVANTAGES:

energy can used to generate electricity using solar panels or used to
heat water directly using solar heating panels.

Advantages…
• Uses no natural resources, other than
those needed for construction.
• Produces no harmful gases.
