V
Conversion of
Units of Volume
2
Volume and capacity of small containers
are mostly expressed in liters, especially if
the containers are used to store liquids.
When you measure the dimensions of the
containers and solve for their volume, the unit of
measure that you will get will be in cubic
centimeters.
This is because the centimeter is the most
appropriate unit of measure to use for small objects.
This is the reason that knowing how to convert cubic
centimeters to liters and cubic meters and vice versa
is a very important skill.
3
 In converting one unit of measure
to another, use multiplication or
division.

 Multiplication is used when

converting a big unit of measure to
a smaller unit of measure.

 Division is used when converting a small

unit of measure to a bigger unit of measure.
4
Look at the table below.

the given number by 1 000 000.
Example 2: How many cubic centimeters are in 7 cubic
meters?
Solution: cubic meters = ___________cubic
centimeters 7 x 1 000 000 = 7 000 000

7 cubic meters = 7 000 000 cubic

centimeters
7
Converting Cubic Meters (m³) to Cubic Centimeters (cm³)

To convert cubic meters to cubic centimeters, multiply

the given number by 1 000 000.
Example 3: How many cubic centimeters are in 2.3
cubic meters?
Solution: 2.3 cubic meters = ___________cubic centimete
2.3 x 1 000 000 = 2 300 000
2.3 cubic meters = 2 300 000 cubic
centimeters
8
Converting Cubic Centimeters (cm³) to Cubic Meters (m³)

To convert cubic centimeters to cubic meters, divide the

given number by 1 000 000.
Example 1: How many cubic meters are in 8 000 000
cubic centimeters?
Solution: 8 000 000 cubic centimeters = _____cubic met
8 000 000 ÷ 1 000 000 = 8
8 000 000 cubic centimeters = 8 cubic
meters
9
Converting Cubic Centimeters (cm³) to Cubic Meters (m³)

To convert cubic centimeters to cubic meters, divide the

given number by 1 000 000.
Example 2: How many cubic meters are in 1 700 000
cubic centimeters?
Solution: 1 700 000 cubic centimeters = _____cubic met
1 700 000 ÷ 1 000 000 = 1.7
1 700 000 cubic centimeters = 1.7 cubic
meters
10
Converting Cubic Centimeters (cm³) to Cubic Meters (m³)
To convert cubic centimeters to cubic meters, divide the
given number by 1 000 000.
Example 3: A big water tank can contain up to 6 000
000 cubic centimeters of water. How many cubic meters
of water does the water tank hold if it is half-filled?
Solution: 3 000 000 cubic centimeters = _____cubic met
3 000 000 ÷ 1 000 000 = 3
3 000 000 cubic centimeters = 3 cubic
The big water meters
tank holds 3 cubic
meters of water when half-filled. 11
Converting Liters (L) to Cubic Centimeters (cm³)

To convert liters to cubic centimeters, multiply the given

number by 1 000.
Example 1: How many cubic centimeters are in 9 liters?

Solution: 9 liters = ____________cubic centimeters

9 x 1 000 = 9 000

9 liters = 9 000 cubic centimeters

12
Converting Liters (L) to Cubic Centimeters (cm³)

To convert liters to cubic centimeters, multiply the given

number by 1 000.
Example 2: How many cubic centimeters are in 1.5
liters?
Solution: 1.5 liters = ____________cubic centimeters
1.5 x 1 000 = 1 500

1.5 liters = 1 500 cubic centimeters

13
Converting Liters (L) to Cubic Centimeters (cm³)

To convert liters to cubic centimeters, multiply the given

number by 1 000.
Example 3: A water container contains 7 liters of water.
How many cubic centimeters of water can hold it?
Solution: 7 liters = ____________cubic centimeters
7 x 1 000 = 7 000
7 liters = 7 000 cubic centimeters
The container contains 7 000
cubic centimeters of water. 14
Converting Cubic Centimeters (cm³) to Liters (L)

Cubic centimeter is smaller than liter. So, to convert it to

liter, divide the given number by 1 000.

Example 1: How many liters are in 27 000 cubic

centimeters?
Solution: 27 000 cubic centimeters = ____________ liters

27 000 ÷ 1 000 = 27

27 000 cubic centimeters = 27 liters
