CURRICULUM

IMPLEMENTATION
INTRODUCTIO
 As a classroom practitioner,N
it is
important that you know what is
involved in implementing the
prescribed curriculum. The aim of
this unit is therefore to take you
through the processes and stages
of curriculum implementation.
 A curriculum must be implemented
if it is to make any desired impact
on students and to attain its goals
Curriculum Implementation defined:
 It is the phase where teacher action takes place.

 It is one of the most crucial processes in curriculum

development although many education planners would
say : “A Good plan is work half done ’’.

 Curriculum implementation means putting into practice

the written curriculum that has been designed in
syllabi, course of study, curricular guides and subjects.

 It is a process wherein the learners acquire the planned

or intended knowledge, skills, attitudes that are aimed
at enabling the same learners to function effectively in
the society.
 Ornstein and Hunkins (1998) As the interaction between the
curriculum that has been written and planned and the person
who are in charged to deliver it. To them, curriculum
implementation implies the following :
• Shift from what is the current to a new or enhanced
curriculum.
• Change in knowledge, actions, and attitudes of the person
involved.
• Change in behavior using new strategies and resources.
• Change which requires efforts hence goals should be
 Loucks
achievable.
and Lieberman (1983) The trying out of a new
practice and what it looks like when actually used in a school
system
 Implementing means using the plan as a guide to engage with the learners
in the teaching learning process with the end in view that learning has
occurred and learning outcomes have been achieved.
 It involves the different strategies of teaching with the support instructional
materials to go with the strategy.
 In the larger scale:
• Putting the curriculum into operation with the different implementing
agents.
• Curriculum implementation takes place in a class, a school, a district, a
division, or the whole higher education system.
• In higher education happens for the course, a degree program, the
institution or the whole higher education system. It requires time, money,
personal interaction, personal contacts and support.
Models of
Implementation
 Overcoming Resistance to Change (ORC)
-focuses on overcoming staff resistance to change that is
present immediately before, or at the time of the
introduction of the innovation.
 Leadership Obstacle Course (LOC)
-extends the ORC model and puts emphasis on the
gathering of data to determine the extent and nature of the
resistance in order to deal with it appropriately.
 Linkage Model
-the linkage process involves a cycle of diagnosis, search,
retrieval, formulation of solution, dissemination and
evaluation.
 Organizational Development (OD)
-this model is an information-processing change strategy
that enables the system to improve its operations and the
quality of interactions among its members to facilitate the
introduction of change.

 Rand Change Agent Model

-the Rand Model is based on the assumption that the
success of the implementation of new program depends on:
1.The characteristics of the proposed change
2.Competencies of the teaching and administrative staff
3.The support of the local community
4.The School organizational structure
Factors Affecting the Choice
of Implementation Model
Level of Resistance
Type of desired change
Available expertise
Available resources
Urgency of the situation
Curriculum Implementation as Change
Process
Kurt Levin’s Force Field Theory and Curriculum Change
Key Factors for Success:

Characteristics of the proposed change

Competencies of Teaching and Administrative
Staff
Support of the Local Community
School Organiational Structure
Purpose
Process
Curriculum Stakeholders
1. Learners are at the core of the curriculum
2. Teachers are curricularists
3. School leaders are curriculum managers
4. Parents are significant school partners
5. Community as the curriculum resourcesand a
learning environment
6. Others stakeholders in curriculum
implementation and development
