THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EXCESSIVE FACEBOOK

USAGE AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE AMONG THE

STUDENTS OF HOLY CHILD ACADEMY BIEN UNIDO
BOHOL INC.

HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES(HUMSS)

Rationale

 Nowadays, social media is used in every aspect of a person's

life and is present in every aspect of their communication.
People can use gadgets to access the internet by connecting
to servers, WIFI, or other networks, or by using data from
other networks. Facebook is one of the most popular social
media sites. It is a free social networking web that promotes
and make it easier for friends, family, and coworkers to
interact with one another.
 According to a September Pulse Asia poll, Facebook is the
most popular social media network among Filipino internet
users. 63% of Filipino adults use the internet, with over half
saying they log on more than once a day, according to a
nationwide survey that involved 2,400 face-to-face interviews
conducted between September 6 and September 11.
 The researchers aim to conduct this research in order to have a
better understanding of using and over using various social
networking services in general and Facebook in particular. This
research study will be conducted in Holy Child Academy of Bien
Unido, Bohol, Inc. and the respondents will be random students of
said school. The researchers aim to gain a better understanding of
the complex relationship between social media and academic
performance, and develop strategies to help students use social
media in a way that supports their learning and development.
Literature Background

 Constructivist Learning Theory is a learning theory

that emphasizes the active role of learners in
building their own understanding. Rather than
passively receiving information, learners reflect on
their experiences, create mental representations,
and incorporate new knowledge into their schemas.
This promotes deeper learning and understanding.
 The Social Media Impact Theory. This theory emerges from the

recognition that social media is not merely a set of digital platforms for social

interaction, but a trans formative cultural force that has redefined how

information is created, shared, and consumed. The ubiquity of social media has

led to significant shifts in everything from how individuals perceive themselves

and others to how movements are mobilized and how businesses operate.
Legal Bases

 REPUBLIC ACT NO. 10175 KNOW AS

CYBERCRIME PREVENTION ACT an act
defining cybercrime, providing for the
prevention, investigation, suppression and the
imposition of penalties therefor and for other
purposes.
 REPUBLIC ACT 10173 KNOWN AS DATA
PRIVACY ACT OF 2012. an act protecting individual
personal information in information and
communications systems in the government and the
private sector, creating for this purpose a national
privacy commission, and for other purposes.
Related Literature

 Ali and Elciyar defined addiction or addictive

patterns in human behavior as intense craving in
people for something. This can lead to have
serious effects on psychological as well as physical
health of 93 the affected person. These new media
applications and their heavy consumption have
been reported to turn into addictions for young
generation. (Ali and Elciyar 2019)
Related Studies

 In another study, Felix et al. used a dataset of 1,307 students’ activity logs in a
course, including variables related to student interactions in forums, chats, quizzes,
activities, time spent on the platform, and grades. They built a predictive model of
student outcomes using Naïve Bayes, decision trees, multilayer perceptron, and
regression algorithms, with the Naïve Bayes model performing the best with an
accuracy of 87%. The study found that the number of interactions with the system,
attendance, and time spent on the platform were essential variables in predicting
student outcomes. Nevertheless, the study was limited to a single course and did
not consider other factors influencing student outcomes, such as prior knowledge
or motivation (Felix, I., Ambrosio, A. 2019)
