Orienteering

Orienteering

Is an art of country race or


navigation using a map and a
compass between check
points along unfamiliar course
or tract.
It started in Scandinavia in
the late 19th century.
It was pioneered by Major
Ernst Killander also known as
the “Father of Orienteering”.
Killander held the first major
orienteering competition in
March 1919 with 155
participants.
The Swedish Orienteering
Federation was established in
1936 and later in 1961

Itis a graphical
representation of a portion
of the earth’s and labels to
represent the features
found on the ground.
Color
representations of
the map in

Blue

Water features like lake,


ponds, or stream.
Black

Man-made object or rock


features like rods, trails,
building, cliffs, and
boulders.
White

Open woods that you


could run through
Green

Vegetation (light green) or


fight (dark green) that you
may want to avoid.
Yellow

Open land or semi-open


land, where you can look
up and see the sky or
power line.
Brown

Landfeatures like earth


banks or contour.
Compass

Itis used for navigation in


orienteering.
Racing suit for
orienteering
Itis a lightweight
stretchable materials that
protects you from under
growth while allowing you
freedom of movement
Shoes

A pair of light strong non-


slip shoes allows you to
have a good grip on the
ground.
Control Card

It is given at the start of the


race. It contains all control
points which must be visited
in the right order. An
electronic device is used to
punch the control card.
