X-ray Skull & C-spine

 Presented by Dr Shaheen Idrees

Resident Radiology SIUT

 Supervised by Dr Ameet Jesrani

Skull Introduction

 The skull, known as the cranium, consists of 22 bones and is

separated into two main regions: the neurocranium, protect the
brain, and the viscerocranium, shaping the face
AP AXIAL Skull Series (Towne’s
Method)

Towne view is an angled anterio-posterior

radiograph of skull and visualizes petrous part of
pyramids,
the dorsal sellae and the posterior clinoid process
which are visible in the shadow of foramen magnum

Nuchal ridge is placed against the image detector

the infra orbito-meatal line
perpendicular to image receptor
Lateral Skull
Series
Use for skull fractures and cranium
base frontal maxillary and sphenoid
sinuses and condition affecting the
sella turcica

Place Head in Lateral Position with side of

interest closes to image receptor and patient
body in semi prone position
PA Series (CALDWELL
METHOD)

Use for skull fracture and para nasal sinuses specially

frontal sinus, it can help to assist inflammatory condition
such as sinusitis, secondary osteomyelitis and sinus
polys

Rest Patient’s Nose and Forehead

against table/ Bucky surface. Flex
neck as needed to align OML
Submentovertex View

Indication
This view is useful in assessing potential
pathology from trauma or disease
progression to the basal skull structures1-4,
including the foramen ovale, foramen
spinosum and sphenoid sinuses

Raised patient chin and

hyperextended the neck if
possible until IOML is parallel to
IR
PA Projection HASS Method

Used for occipital bone

petrous pyramids and
foramen magnum with
dorsum sellae and
posterior clanoids in its
shadow

Rest patient nose and forehead on

table, flex neck OML perpendicular
to IR
Cervical Vertebrae
Identified by presence of foramina tram versalis

There are 7 cervical vertebrae

3 to 6 are Typical
1st , 2nd , 7th vertebrae are Atypical

Function

Provide Mobility & Stability to Head

Protects Spinal Cord, meninges, vessels, and int seogan
Normal Radiological finding in C-Spine
