#4 Network Topology

The document provides an overview of various network topologies including Bus, Ring, Star, Mesh, Tree, and Hybrid topologies, detailing their structures, advantages, and disadvantages. Each topology is described in terms of how nodes are interconnected and the implications for network performance and management. Additionally, it distinguishes between physical and logical topology representations.

Topology

Topology defines the structure of the network of how all the

components are interconnected physically or logically to
each other.
Bus Topology
 The bus topology is designed in such a way
that all the stations are connected through a
single cable known as a backbone cable.

 Each node is either connected to the

backbone cable by drop cable or directly
connected to the backbone cable.
Bus Topology
Advantages Disadvantages
 It can be difficult to identify the
problems if the whole network goes
 It works well when you have a down.

 It's the easiest network topology  Terminators are required for both

 It requires less cable length than  If a main cable is damaged, the

Ring Topology
 Ring topology is like a bus topology, but
with connected ends.

 The data flows in a single loop

continuously known as an endless loop

 The data flows in one direction, i.e

clockwise direction.
Ring Topology

topology.
Star Topology

 Star topology is an arrangement of the network in

which every node is connected to the central hub,
switch or a central computer.
 Coaxial cable or RJ-45 cables are used to connect the
computers.
 Star topology is the most popular topology in
network implementation.
Star Topology
A star topology is designed with each node connected directly to a central hub.
Data on a star network passes through the hub before continuing to its
destination. The hub manages and controls all the functions of the network.
Mesh Topology
 Mesh technology is an arrangement of the network
in which computers are interconnected with each
other through various redundant connections.
 It does not contain the switch, hub or any central
computer.

 formula:

Number of cables = (n*(n-1))/2;

Where n is the number of nodes that represents the

network.

in the network they communicate

Tree Topology
Tree topology combines the characteristics of bus
topology and star topology.

A tree topology is a type of structure in which all the

computers are connected with each other in the form
of hierarchical.
Tree Topology
Advantages Disadvantages
Support for signals for long Difficult troubleshooting if
distance fault occurs in the node
Easily expandable High cost
Easily manageable Failure if the backbone cable

Hybrid Topology
The combination of
two or more different
topologies are
combined together is
termed as Hybrid
Topology.
Hybrid Topology
Advantages Disadvantages
Complex design
Reliable – if fault occurs in one
part then will not affect the rest Costly hub
Size of network can be easily Costly infrastructure
expanded by adding new devices
Flexible – can be designed
according to the requirement
Effective
Physical & LOGICAL
Topology
Physical Topology is the geometric representation of all nodes in a network. A
physical topology is how they are actually interconnected with wires and
cables.

For example, in a shared Ethernet network that uses hubs rather than switches,
the logical topology appears as if every node is connected to a common bus that
runs from node to node.
