Vampires and Transylvania
Many people in the world think that vampires really exist in Transylvania. The reality is that there arent any and there never were.
In the XVth century in the territory today known as Romania, there was a cruel ruler (Vlad Tepes) who used to impale dishonest persons and took pleasure in doing it; the Irish writer Bram Stocker read about him and wrote in 1897 the fictional book Dracula. Plus, it is known that the Carpathian mountains in Romania have many caves and there are obviously bats living in them. Most of the castles are built in the mountains, so probably this led to the association with bats.
Vlad Tepes was born in Sighioara, Transylvania, (today in Mures county) in the winter of 1431. He died in 1477 (aged 46). Vlad's head was taken to Constantinople as a trophy, and his body was buried unceremoniously by his rival, Basarab Laiota.
The descendents of Vlad Tepes' sons, Vlad epelu and Mihnea I "the Bad", are ancestors of Elizabeth II, Queen of Great Britain. In October 2011, Prince Charles publicly claimed that genealogy proves that he is a distant relative of Vlad the Impaler.
