Introduction to course ‘Product
development using CAD’
There is a high demand for designers and
professionals from design backgrounds as
the design industry is booming at a fast
pace.

Many colleges in India offers vide range of

courses like B.Des.& M.Des. The syllabus
includes topics like product branding,
design documentation, CAD/CAM, material
design, design softwares etc., so that
design students can find a job in any field
which includes tech companies like, Philips,
Maruti Suzuki, Samsung, TATA Enterprise,
eBay, Oracle, Amazon, Apple, HP, other
research company etc.
Idea Generation
The idea generation is not compiled in a single
approach; instead, it is continuous innovation and
improvement. Companies have recognized the
importance of idea generation and are supporting
their employees for the same.

This procedure usually begins with a proper

understanding of the job. The aim is to generate
questions that will act as fuel to your motivation.
choose the most effective alternative, followed by
its proper implementation.
STEPS FOR IDEA
GENERATION
Thomas Alva Edison developed a systematic method of idea generation that includes a
series of effective steps. This made the idea generation process more convenient to apply
and get the desired results out of them.Thomas Edison put forward the following steps:

Enabling: The search for the right field of innovation

Defining: Develop search queries and specify search paths

Inspiring: Search for thoughts and stimuli from other areas

Selecting: Generate and evaluate ideas

Optimizing: From the initial idea to the mature concept

Nurturing: Enrich ideas with various implementation strategies

1. The 5W+H Method 9. Using online Tools

2. Social listing 10. Visualization and

Visual Prompts

3. Brainstroming

4. Role-Playing

5. Mind Mapping

6. Questioning Assumptions

7. Collaboration
The Role of Sketching in the Design
Process
As a tool or skill, sketching has its role in the
design process. That role will vary depending on
the end-product being created, the size and scope
of the project, the individual designer's style,
experience, and workflow, and the client's
expectations.

A large project will benefit from sketching

throughout the design process. Sketching initiate
with basic concepts.

The concepts can further be refined with detailed

sketching.

Materials
There are different aspects one can consider when looking for the best material, but
there are three aspects you should always consider: performance, aesthetics and cost.

• Performance requirements

• Aesthetics

• Material and manufacturing cost

Types of
Materials
Alloys
Polymers
Elastomers
Ceramics
Glass
Cements
Composites
Ferrous Alloys
Carbon Steel - Low-Carbon Steel
Medium-Carbon
Steel
High-Carbon Steel
• Stainless Steel- Austenitic Stainless Steel
Ferritic Stainless Steel
Martensitic Stainless Steel
Duplex Stainless Steel
• C
• Cast Iron- Gray Cast Iron
Ductile Cast Iron (Nodular Cast Iron)
White Cast Iron
Malleable Cast Iron
Aluminium Alloys
Aluminium is a widely used material,
particularly in the aerospace industry,
due to its light weight and corrosion
resistance. Despite the fact that
aluminium alloys are generally not as
strong as steels, they nevertheless
have a good strength-to-weight ratio.
Nickel Alloys
Nickel alloys have high
temperature and corrosion
resistance. Common
alloying ingredients include
copper, chromium, and
iron. Common nickel alloys
include Monel, K-Monel,
Inconel, and Hastelloy
Copper Alloys
Copper alloys primarily consist of
brasses and bronzes. Zinc is the
major alloying ingredient in brass.
Tin is a major alloying element in
most bronzes. Bronzes may also
contain aluminium, nickel, zinc,
silicon, and other elements. The
bronzes are typically stronger than
the brasses while still maintaining
good corrosion resistance.
Titanium Alloys
Titanium alloys are light, strong,
and have high corrosion
resistance. Their density is much
lower than steel, and their
strength-to-weight ratio is
excellent. For this reason, titanium
alloys are used fairly commonly,
especially in the aerospace
industry. One primary downside of
titanium alloys is the high cost.
Polymers
Many useful engineering
materials are polymers, such
as plastics, rubbers, fibers,
adhesives, and coatings.
Polymers are classified as
thermoplastic polymers,
thermosetting polymers
(thermosets), and elastomers.
Elastomers
Elastomers are highly
elastic polymers with
mechanical properties
similar to rubber.
Elastomers are
commonly used for
seals, adhesives,
hoses, belts, and other
flexible parts
Ceramics
Ceramics are solid compounds
that may consist of metallic or
nonmetallic elements. The
primary classifications of
ceramics include glasses,
cements, clay products,
refractories, and abrasives
Glass
Glasses are common materials
and are seen in applications
including windows, lenses, and
containers. Glasses are
amorphous, whereas the other
ceramics are mainly crystalline
Cements
Cements are materials
that, after mixing with
water, form a paste that
then hardens. Because
of this characteristic,
cements can be formed
into useful shapes while
in paste form before
they harden into rigid
structures
Composites
A composite material is a
material in which one or
more mutually insoluble
materials are mixed or
bonded together. The
primary classes of
composites are particulate
composites, fibrous
composites, and laminated
composites.
Introduction to CAD
CAD (Computer Aided Design) is the use of
computer software to design and document a
product’s design process.
CAD is used to design, develop and optimize
products.
CAD is extensively used in the design of tools
and equipment required in the manufacturing
process as well as in the construction domain.
CAD is used to accomplish preliminary design
and layouts, design details and calculations,
creating 3-D models, creating drawings, as well
as interfacing with analysis, marketing, 3D
printing, manufacturing, and end-user
personnel.
Types of CAD Software

 2D CAD

 3D CAD (Solid Modelling)

 3D Wireframe and Surface Modelling

 FEA/FEM.
CAD software enables
Efficiency in the quality of design

Increase in the Engineer’s productivity

Better documentation and communication

Today, the use of CAD is done by all industries.

From aerospace, electronics to manufacturing,
Since CAD encourages creativity and speeds up
productivity, it is becoming more and more useful
as an important tool for visualization before
actually implementing a manufacturing process.
Rapid prototyping
Rapid prototyping is a group of techniques
used to quickly fabricate a scale model of
a physical part or assembly using three-
dimensional computer aided design (CAD)
data. Construction of the part or assembly
is usually done using 3D printing or
"additive layer manufacturing"
technology.
Rapid Prototyping techniques offer multiple
benefits, such as:
 Fast and effective communication of design ideas

 Effective validation of design fit, form, and function

 Greater design flexibility, with the ability to run quickly

through multiple design iterations
 Fewer production design flaws and better end-products

Conclusion
• This industrial training was a great opportunity
for me to interact with latest technologies,
techniques and modern software used in the
field of mechanical engineering.

• It gave me better understanding about the

process of product development which is in
high demand for designers and professionals in
industry.
