ELECTRICAL

WIRING DIAGRAM
Why is there a
need to use the
electrical
symbols in a
schematic
diagram?
A wiring diagram is a simplified
conventional pictorial
presentation of an electrical
circuit.
 It shows the components of the

circuit as simplified shapes and

the power and signal
connections between the
devices.
 A diagram can represent the flow

of current in a conductor or wire.

TWO TYPES OF DIAGRAMS:
 A pictorial diagram is a sketch of an
electrical circuit that shows the external
appearance of each component. It is
much like a photograph of the circuit
and uses simple parts images.
A schematic diagram is a sketch
showing the components of the
circuit using standard electrical
symbols. It shows the number of
components and how the wiring is
routed but not the actual location.
 CIRCUIT is a path where
current flows from
negative to positive,
interconnecting a bulb or
switch and a plug-in a
piece of wire.
Electrical circuits represent

the complete path of the

electrical current.
TYPES OF CIRCUIT CONNECTIONS
Series Circuit is a circuit in which lamps are
arranged in a chain so that the current has
only one path to take. The current is the same
through each load.
 An example of this is the Christmas lights.
 Parallel Circuit is a circuit in which lamps are
connected across the wires. The voltage
across each load on a parallel circuit is the
same. The advantage of using a parallel circuit
is that even if one of the lamps fails, the
remaining lamps will still function.
What are the different circuit
terms in electrical works?
1. Closed-circuit
 This is a complete circuit through which

electric current or magnetic lines of force

can pass. The circuit is closed when the
control device is set to the ON setting.
2. Open Circuit
 This is a circuit that is not electrically

continuous and in which current

cannot flow. When the control device
is set to offsetting, the circuit is
open.
3. Short Circuit
 Line one and line two of AC voltage or

positive or negative terminal of DC

voltage contact each other. Without
passing through the load, direct contact
is considered to be a short circuit.
4.Ground Circuit
 The metallic framework is

conductively connected either

through two lines or one wire
touching the metal housing of the
electrical appliance.
How to draw an electrical wiring
plan?
 An electrical wiring plan is a

detailed drawing showing the

location of different components of
the entire electrical system of a
given structure.
 It is a devised program of action

for an electrician to follow that

guides him to the optimum or
perfect way of doing the
installation.
ELECTRICAL WIRING PLAN
1. Ceiling Plan Electrical Layout
 This shows the service entrance location,

kwh meter, main safety switch, power

panel, switches, lighting outlets, and circuit
number.
2. Floor Plan
 This shows the service entrance location, kwh

meter, main safety switch, power panel,

convenience outlets, and circuit number.
3. Schedule of Load
 This is a summarized

computation of current (in

amperes) based on the
number of outlets per circuit
and the kind of load or current-
consuming device or appliance
on that particular circuit.
4. Location Plan
This shows the exact location of the proposed
project. It includes bordering areas and
prominent landmarks and structures. The
direction is indicated using arrowheads.
Prominent landmarks may be churches,
municipalities, schools, malls, stations, and
the like.
5. Specification
 It is a list specifying the approach of
installation with regards to:
 The work should conform with the latest rules

and regulations by NEC, PEC, and City or

municipal ordinances governing electricity
use.
 The method of wiring
 The number of service entrance
 The phase and voltage
 The size of the conductors
 The vertical distances of convenience outlets,

switches, and main safety switch above the

floor line
The materials must be brand new and of the
approved type
Example of Specification:
 All electrical works herein shall be done by the provision of the Philippine
Electrical Code and shall all comply with the rules and regulations of the
city electric and with the requirements of the local electric utility
(Meralco).
 Type of wiring installation shall be done in rigid metallic conduit (rmc) to
all branch circuits.
 All electrical materials to be used by the brand new and approved types
for location and purpose.
 Unless otherwise specified on the plan, the minimum wire size to be used
shall be no. 12 = 3.5mm in 15mm diameter pipe.
 The power supply shall be 220 volts, single-phase three wires, and 60
cycles.
 Mounting heights shall be as follows from the finished floor line to the
center of the device.
 Lpa – 1.50 m
 kWhm – 1.50 m
 tumbler switch – 1.48 m
 convenience outlet =- 0.30 m
 special-purpose outlet – 0.30 m
 All electrical works herein shall be done under the direct and immediate

7. Legend
It shows all electrical symbols
and their descriptions used in the
plan. SYMBOLS DESCRIPTION

The following are the pointers to review in
preparation for the fourth periodic test.

 Electrical Supplies, Materials, and Tools

 Electrical Joints and Splices
 Request appropriate supplies, materials, and
tools for a specific job
 Perform Mensuration and Calculation
 Analyze signs, symbols, and data
 Electrical wiring diagram
