    POEM: AUTO WRECK

    Its quick soft silver bell beating, beating, And down the dark one ruby flare Pulsing out red light like an artery, The ambulance at top speed floating down Past beacons and illuminated clocks Wings in a heavy curve, dips down, And brakes speed, entering the crowd.

    ruby flare: dark red colour flame but unsteady light. pulsing: to move/flow with strong regular movement. beacons: a light that placed somewhere to guide vehicles, warm them of danger.

    The doors leap open, emptying light; Stretchers are laid out, the mangled lifted And stowed into the little hospital. Then the bell, breaking the hush, tolls once. And the ambulance with its terrible cargo Rocking, slightly rocking, moves away, As the doors, an afterthought, are closed.
    mangled: to crush/twist sth so that it is badly damaged. Stowed: to put sth in a safe place.

    We are deranged, walking among the cops Who sweep glass and are large and composed. One is still making notes under the light. One with a bucket douches ponds of blood Into the street and gutter.
    deranged: unable to behave and think normally. douches: wash away with water. gutter: a channel of the edge of a road where water collects and is carried away to drains.

    One hangs lanterns on the wrecks that cling, Empty husks of locusts, to iron poles. Our throats were tight as tourniquets, Our feet were bound with splints, but now, Like convalescents intimate and gauche,
    husks: the dry outer covering of grain.
    locusts: a large insect lives in hot countries, flies in large group. tourniquets: a piece of cloth, tied tightly around an arm/leg to stop the blood from a wound. splints: a long piece of wood/metal that is tied to a broken arm/leg.

    We speak through sickly smiles and warn With the stubborn saw of common sense, The grim joke and the banal resolution. The traffic moves around with care, But we remain, touching a wound That opens to our richest horror. Already old, the question Who shall die? Becomes unspoken Who is innocent?
    grim: looking/sounding very serious. banal: very ordinary, containing nothing that is interesting/important.

    For death in war is done by hands; Suicide has cause and stillbirth, logic; And cancer, simple as a flower, blooms. But this invites the occult mind, Cancels our physics with a sneer, And spatters all we knew of denouement Across the expedient and wicked stones.

    sneer: an unpleasant look/smile/comment that shows you do not respect. denouement: a final part of a story in which everything is made clear and no question/surprises remain.

    Topic: A car crash


    Summary: The poem starts with a description of an ambulance rushing to the scene of a crash, and hurriedly gathering up the victims and rushing them away. The second and third stanzas explore the emotions felt after the car crash from the perspective of a witness.

    LITERARY DEVICES
    Alliteration: The repetition of the initial consonant. There should be at least two repetitions in a row. Examples: soft, silver bell, beating bell, breaking down, dark light, like dips, down tight, tourniquets sickly, smiles stubborn, saw

    Repetition: The repeating of words, phrases, lines, or stanzas. Examples: beating, beating floating down, dips down rocking, slightly rocking

    Imagery: Language that evokes sensory images. Examples: Pulsing out red light like an artery = The light as Pulsing out like an artery,
    contrasting the red light emitted from an ambulance to the blood of an artery. The idea that a light is spurted out like blood is abstract and bizarre.

    One with a bucket douches ponds of blood = It refers to the police man washing away the exaggerated ponds of blood from the accident.

    Parallel structure:

    One is still..., One with a bucket..., One hangs... Our throats were tight..., Our feet were bound... And cancer..., And spatters... Who shall die, Who is innocent

    Hyperbole: Literary exaggeration. Example: ponds of blood Onomatopoeia: The use of words to imitate the sounds they describe. Example: silver bell beating, beating

    Simile: Figure of speech involving a comparison between unlike things using like, as, or as though. Examples: like convalescents innocent and gauche, red light like an artery, throats tight as tourniquets, cancer, simple as a flower

    Metaphor: A comparison in which one thing is said to be another. lanterns are described as empty husks of locusts Empty husks=the empty and dry outer covering of nuts and etc, especially grain.
