Overview of MNP
In India, MNP was first launched in Haryana in November, 2010. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh launched Mobile Number Portability (MNP) all over India on 20th January, 2011. India is the 8th nation in Asia to launch MNP.
Types of MNP
Location based portability
Enables a mobile subscriber to use the same number when shifting from one geographical area to another. E.g. M.P to Delhi
Terminologies in MNP
Donor operator: Means a operator from whose network the subscriber is porting out. Recipient operator: Means an Operator who will be providing mobile service to the subscriber after porting.
Eligibility Criteria
Users can switch if and only if a minimum period of 90 days has elapsed after subscription to the mobile service of the current service provider. There should be no payment due to the Donor Operator before the date of application for porting.
MNP Process
Users will have to send an SMS (PORT Mobile Number) from the number he wishes to be ported, to number 1900 whereby a Unique Porting Code (UPC) will be received on SMS from his current service provider. The UPC will have to be submitted in the prescribed application form to the chosen new service provider. Porting has to be completed within 7 working days. MNP has a price ceiling of Rs 19.
