Mobile Number Portability: Made By: Sakshi Arora

Mobile number portability allows subscribers in India to retain their existing mobile number when switching to a new service provider. MNP was first launched in Haryana in 2010 and across India in January 2011, making India the 8th country in Asia to implement this. There are three types of MNP: location-based which allows number retention when changing locations; service-based which allows retaining numbers when changing technologies; and operator-based which allows retaining numbers when changing service providers. For MNP, there are eligibility criteria including a minimum 90 day subscription period and no outstanding payments to the existing provider. The MNP process involves obtaining a unique porting code from the existing provider to submit to the new provider, who must complete the port

What is Mobile number portability?

It allows subscriber to opt for service provider of his choice while retaining his existing mobile number.

Overview of MNP
In India, MNP was first launched in Haryana in November, 2010. The Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh launched Mobile Number Portability (MNP) all over India on 20th January, 2011. India is the 8th nation in Asia to launch MNP.

Types of MNP
Location based portability
Enables a mobile subscriber to use the same number when shifting from one geographical area to another. E.g. M.P to Delhi

Service based portability

Enables subscribers of a company to use the same numbers across different mobile technologies. E.g. GSM to CDMA

Operator based portability

This makes it possible for a mobile subscriber to shift from one mobile service provider to another. E.g. Idea to Airtel

Terminologies in MNP
Donor operator: Means a operator from whose network the subscriber is porting out. Recipient operator: Means an Operator who will be providing mobile service to the subscriber after porting.

Eligibility Criteria
Users can switch if and only if a minimum period of 90 days has elapsed after subscription to the mobile service of the current service provider. There should be no payment due to the Donor Operator before the date of application for porting.

MNP Process
Users will have to send an SMS (PORT Mobile Number) from the number he wishes to be ported, to number 1900 whereby a Unique Porting Code (UPC) will be received on SMS from his current service provider. The UPC will have to be submitted in the prescribed application form to the chosen new service provider. Porting has to be completed within 7 working days. MNP has a price ceiling of Rs 19.

Benefits of MNP to customers

No need to stick to any service provider just to retain the number. With MNP, we can switch operator, where we can get a better deal on tariffs or services. It reduces natural cost for the user in switching service provider. The service is available to both pre-paid and postpaid subscriber. It benefits caller, they dont have to update phone book every time.

Benefits of MNP to Service providers

It increases competition, which helps telecom operator to improve its product line and services. It provides a fair chance to all new service providers. Players with better quality of service and innovative products will sustain for longer period. It consolidates the telecom industry.
