Academic Advising - Resources for Students

Advising Tools for Students

Student Planning

Student Planning is the official University advising tool which gives advisors and students an overview of progress and course completion. This tool gives students more control over their academic planning process.

If you have any questions about Student Planning, please contact the Office of Records and Registration at registrarFREESXU. For helpful videos including an introduction to student planning, preparing for registration, and registering for classes, please visit the Records and Registration page.

Canvas

Canvas may be used by academic advisors to connect students to helpful academic advising resources. Students can access their advisor's course shell through Canvas.

Student Support

Students that begin to struggle in any of their courses should immediately communicate with their professors and academic advisors. These individuals can provide students with the appropriate resources to get back on track.

In addition to professors and academic advisors, students may also utilize Student Support for additional support and guidance including:

  • Time Management
  • Study Strategies
  • Testing Anxiety
  • Managing Course Work
  • Goal Setting
  • Establishing a Plan After Academic Dismissal
  • Food Insecurity

Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB) and Seal of Biliteracy

College credit is awarded to students who have taken AP, IB, and or the Seal of Biliteracy. Students with this type of credit will want to submit their official scores to the University as soon as possible as well as notify their assigned advisor for the purposes of academic planning.

For more information regarding this type of credit, please visit the AP, IB, and Seal of Biliteracy page.

Finding Your Assigned Academic Advisor

Students can identify the name of their assigned academic advisor(s) by logging into Student Planning through the mySXU portal and then selecting Plan and Schedule (Option 2). While on the Plan and Schedule page, click on the Advising tab. This will provide you with the name of your advisors along with a button to email them.

Advisors in the Student Advising Center advise pre-clinical nursing and undecided students. All other majors are assigned faculty advisors within their respective departments. Students can identify their advisor using the instructions above or by contacting the Student Advising Center.

Viewing Advising Notes

Advising notes are left for students by their advisor in Student Planning. To access these, select Plan and Schedule (Option 2) and click on the Advising tab. Notes will be listed in the View Note History section at the bottom of the page.

For more information regarding registration, please contact Records and Registration at registrarFREESXU.

Adding and Dropping Classes

It is suggested that students meet with their assigned advisor prior to adding or dropping a class to determine how the change in schedule will affect their academic progress. Students will want to contact financial aid to determine how dropping a class may affect financial aid eligibility. To drop a class, students will need to contact Records and Registration at registrarFREESXU.

Athletes may need additional approval from their coaches to add or drop a class.

Major and Career Exploration

Students can utilize a variety of major and career exploration resources to learn more about various pathways and make informed decisions about their majors, minors, and careers.

Declaring a Major and Minor

Students can declare a major or minor by emailing Records and Registration at registrarFREESXU. A new major advisor will be assigned.

Taking Courses at Another University

Students may take a limited number of courses at other schools; however, an off-campus course approval form needs to be completed through the Office of Records and Registration, A-203. Be sure to have the form completed before the course begins. A typed, detailed explanation for the request must accompany the form. Students should also contact and coordinate with the Transfer Student Services Center.

You must also obtain the appropriate signatures from your advisor and the dean of the school in which the course resides. Please consult the Transfer Student Services Center for the number of allowable transfer credits.

Transfer Student Policies

If you are a transfer student and have been newly admitted, you will need to complete a Request Advising Appointment Form. The Transfer Student Services Center will then reach out to schedule an advising appointment.

If you have any questions or need more information, please call 773-298-3510.
