Embarking on a magical adventure to a Disney theme park requires more than just a sprinkle of pixie dust — it also calls the perfect backpack. Whether you're navigating through bustling crowds, queuing up for your favorite attractions, waiting in line to meet your favorite character, or ensuring you have all the essentials for a day of fun, your backpack will be your trusted companion throughout your days walking around Walt Disney World, Disneyland, or a Disney water park

Days at Disney can get long — especially when the park is open until midnight — so you want to make sure you choose an option that fits your needs and is both practical and comfortable. When selecting the perfect backpack for your Disney adventure, consider factors such as storage capacity, comfort features like adjustable straps and padding, and durability to withstand a day of park hopping.

For this article, we sorted through results from six different Travel + Leisure backpack tests and scoured the internet to find some Disney-themed, researched options. Take a look to prepare for your next Disney getaway.

Why We Love It
  • This lightweight backpack provides the best value for all of its features and comfort level.

What to Consider
  • The fabric seems water resistant but is not necessarily waterproof, so you may not want to use this backpack when it’s pouring outside.

Don’t be fooled by how lightweight this backpack is: even though it weighs less than a pound, it is the perfect size to pack all of your Disney essentials — and then some. In the main pocket, we were able to fit a light rain coat, accessories, and snacks, and there was plenty of room to fit an additional sweatshirt and more items (read: all the Disney souvenirs). The outer pocket is roomy enough for a pair of sunglasses, lip gloss, wallet, phone, keys, and tissues. We also fit a 32-ounce water bottle in one of the side pockets, but there is space for an even bigger size bottle.

Not only does this backpack impress with storage capacity, but it also delivers in comfort. The L.L.Bean Stowaway Pack features adjustable shoulder, chest, and hip straps, and has light padding on the shoulder straps. Despite being so lightweight, this backpack still provides enough support that the straps don't dig into your shoulders when carrying heavier items, and the hip straps provide extra stability. Another bonus is that the back panel has a perforated panel to keep your back cooler, which is perfect for those potentially sweltering Florida or California days.

We love that it comes in multiple color options so there’s a style to fit everyone’s taste. Priced modestly, this backpack is great for any budget and doesn’t compromise on storage, comfort, durability, or style.

Best Anti-theft

Cheruty Backpack Purse

Why We Love It
  • The bag’s functionality, spaciousness, and anti-theft features make it a worthwhile investment for peace of mind.

What to Consider
  • As is the nature of an anti-theft backpack, you sacrifice ease of quick access for enhanced security when retrieving items from inside the bag.

You can never be too safe in crowded spaces like a theme park, and we love that this option is secure, durable, and doesn’t break the bank. This compact and chic anti-theft mini backpack proves to be a stylish yet secure choice for daily use. With a single, smooth zipper on the main compartment, it features three smaller slip compartments and one zippered compartment for efficient organization. Positioned against the back for anti-theft purposes, the main compartment, though slightly less accessible, provides peace of mind. We love that you can adjust the straps to wear this bag in three ways: as a tote, on your shoulder, or as a traditional backpack. During testing, we found this bag to be so lightweight that we didn’t notice we were carrying it, which is perfect for a long day at a theme park.

The Details: 12.6 x 12.6 x 5.9 inches | 1.4 pounds

Why We Love It
  • It's fully waterproof and will keep everything inside dry from rain or splashes.

What to Consider
  • The back padding takes a while to dry if it gets wet.

Whether you're heading to Florida during hurricane season or want to hit all the water rides on a hot California day, there's always a chance to get wet at Disney. To be confident that your valuables won't get soaked, consider bringing this backpack from Stubble & Co. We tested this one in our T+L lab and ranked it a favorite in our best waterproof backpacks test, spraying it with multiple showerheads to see how it held up. The durable PET material and lined zippers ensured that nothing inside the bag got wet, making it the perfect choice if you get caught in a rainstorm while waiting in line for Peter Pan.

There are also plenty of other features that make this a great bag for Disney. It's an organized packer's dream, thanks to a host of internal and external pockets of all different sizes. We thought the straps were comfortable to wear for extended periods of time, and the back is fully padded for additional comfort. Our only complaint is that the adjustable chest strap fell off during testing, and we couldn't figure out how to get it back on. The back padding also took a while to dry (while the rest of the bag dried very quickly), but we didn't think that was a big deal since that part will be pressed up against your back, out of the rain anyway. Other than that, we love this bag as a way to have peace of mind about electronics and valuables so you can focus on the fun parts of your vacation.

The Details: 18.1 x 11.8 x 5.5 inches | 2.2 pounds | 20-liter capacity | Waterproof

Why We Love It
  • You can switch this convertible backpack into a tote or crossbody for multiple ways to carry it.

What to Consider
  • It's not as comfortable to wear as a tote bag.

Even the most supportive backpacks can get uncomfortable to carry around in the same position all day. This convertible backpack from Baggallini can be worn as a backpack, shoulder tote, or crossbody, allowing you to change the positioning as needed. During testing, we found the bag to be incredibly spacious — great for a theme park day that requires packing things like snacks, water, sunglasses, portable chargers, and other gear. We like that there are also plenty of pockets inside to keep everything organized.

This bag is easy to convert between the three options. The tote and crossbody straps are permanently attached to the bag, so you can just grab them as needed. The backpack straps are detachable — you can tuck them into the back pocket when not in use. We found that the bag was most comfortable to wear as a backpack when packed full, but the tote straps felt a little too short to throw over our shoulder. The bag was also comfortable to carry as a crossbody, but awkward in size when totally full, so we would opt for this function with fewer contents inside. Overall, this is a great bag for people who want lots of pockets and the option to convert their bag between a backpack and a tote or purse.

The Details: 11.5 x 14.5 x 7 inches | 2.25 pounds

Why We Love It
  • This backpack is the epitome of showing off your fandom in a chic and elegant way.

What to Consider
  • The straps are made of leather, so it may take a couple of wears for them to feel comfortable.

When we were researching bags for this category, this chic backpack stood out as an elevated choice to showcase anyone’s love for all things Disney. The bag features subtle Minnie ears adorned with her iconic red bow, which adds a perfect pop of color. With a drawstring complemented by a magnetic snap closure, this backpack ensures both security and convenience. Whether you're strolling through the Disney parks or walking around city streets, this Kate Spade backpack is the epitome of sophistication and whimsy, making it a must-have accessory for any Disney enthusiast.

The Details: 10 x 9 x 5.9 inches | Water-resistant

Why We Love It
  • A parent’s dream, this backpack is spacious yet very compact.

What to Consider
  • The canvas material could get stained relatively easily, but the bag is machine washable.

This diaper bag is sure to stand out in any crowd, but does not compromise on functionality. During testing, we found that parents will love this bag’s thoughtful design and practical features. The Zealous Backpack comes with its own spillproof changing mat and boasts various pockets for organization, including two outer zipper pockets, one with dividers and a key ring, and four mesh pockets inside. The bag's impressive capacity effortlessly accommodates essentials (even a blanket), making it a versatile choice to pack everything you need for your baby’s first Disney experience. The bag has a compact design so parents can throw it into a stroller cargo or take advantage of the padded straps that guarantee a comfortable fit when the stroller is parked. This diaper bag proves a worthwhile investment, making it an ideal choice for parents seeking both style and functionality. It comes in both neutrals and vibrant prints, including Disney and Star Wars prints (although these styles tend to sell out).

The Details: 16 x 11 x 5 inches | 2.1 pounds | Machine washable

Why We Love It
  • Disney fans will love all of the design details in this compact style, from the sparkly sequins to Minnie’s iconic bow.

What to Consider
  • If you prefer carrying a larger number of items or have specific needs for a more spacious backpack, the mini size might not be ideal.

What truly sets this Loungefly backpack apart is its playful design accents. Sitting adorably atop the bag are iconic mouse ears paired with a signature bow, showing off Minnie Mouse's timeless style. After all, what's a trip to Disney without a nod to its beloved characters?

Crafted with a shimmering silver sequin-studded exterior, this backpack will sparkle and shine with every step you take through the parks. The dazzling exterior is not just for show: it's also durable, ensuring that your belongings stay safe and secure throughout your day. Equipped with multiple storage compartments, this backpack offers space to organize all your essentials. While this was not part of any official tests, I am very familiar with Loungefly backpacks and can attest to their unique style, durability, and comfort. As is the nature of a mini backpack, it’s important to consider your personal storage requirements and whether a smaller backpack would accommodate everything you plan to bring to the park.

The Details: 10.5 x 9 x 4.5 inches | 1.65 pounds | 6-liter capacity

Why We Love It
  • This spacious backpack has an impressive lightweight design for a long day at a Disney theme park so you can carry everything you need.

What to Consider
  • There is an interior sleeve for a hydration pack, but we would have liked to see a more intuitive design for hydration valves.

The Osprey Daylight Plus Pack proves that you can get a large backpack without breaking the bank — or your back. During our monthlong test, we were impressed that despite being filled, the backpack remained extraordinarily lightweight, allowing for easy distribution of weight that was not burdensome on the shoulders and back. The comfortable fit and snug positioning on our back ensured security without sacrificing mobility, with light padding on the shoulder straps and back panels contributing to a comfortable experience. Despite being one of the largest bags on this list, it is still well within the size restriction Disney places on backpacks.

The Details: 19 x 11 x 9.5 inches | 1.3 pounds | 20-liter capacity | Water-repellant

Why We Love It
  • This bag was thoughtfully designed specifically for kids ages two to seven, perfectly sized and equipped with age-appropriate features.

What to Consider
  • While the backpack expands for added storage, it may become bulkier and harder for smaller kids to carry when fully loaded.

As we were looking for Disney backpacks suitable for kids, we chose this option because it was designed with the needs of young children in mind — particularly for kids ages two to seven. This was not one that we tested ourselves, but this expandable backpack is lightweight (under 1 pound!) and has a travel-friendly design that makes it ideal for school, everyday excursions, and long-term trips, ensuring that your little one can carry their essentials with ease. Safety is paramount with reflective details that enhance visibility, providing peace of mind for parents. Crafted from water-repellent fabrics that wipe clean, this backpack is built to last. The adorable Mickey Mouse print adds a playful touch to this practical backpack, which has a zippered expander panel for added storage and a pull-out seat pad for enhanced comfort during journeys.

The Details: 10.2 x 8.7 x 4.7 inches | 12.8 ounces | 6-liter capacity when compact; 8-liter capacity when expanded | Water-repellent

Why We Love It
  • We love its spacious design with multiple compartments, making it easy to organize, and the print is fun for teens.

What to Consider
  • The vibrant allover print might not appeal to everyone’s personal style preferences.

Style meets functionality with this option we found during our research, specially selected for teens wanting a fun, bold look. With its vibrant allover print featuring beloved Disney characters Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, and Pluto, this full-size backpack is designed for maximum functionality without adding too much bulk. Perfect for a day at a Disney park or everyday use, this bag boasts a spacious zip compartment with a mesh pocket and a padded laptop compartment. Four exterior compartments offer easy access to must-have items, while a mesh water bottle pouch keeps hydration within reach. With padded back and adjustable shoulder straps, this backpack ensures comfort during long days.

The Details: 18 x 13 x 7.5 inches

Why We Love It
  • The Disney Campus Backpack comes in multiple themed prints, currently available in Beauty and the Beast florals and Mickey and Minnie paisley.

What to Consider
  • The material is made of cotton, so it’s not a great option for a rainy day.

Vera Bradley is known for its prints — and these Disney-themed ones do not disappoint. With its vibrant exterior and functional design, this backpack is the perfect companion for your magical journey through the parks. Boasting multiple storage compartments — including my favorite, the hidden back zip pocket — anyone will have plenty of room to stash an entire day’s worth of essentials. Made with padded shoulder straps and a contoured back panel, this backpack prioritizes your comfort, which is especially important during long days of walking around the parks. While we did not test this backpack specifically, I have had several Vera Bradley Campus Backpacks and can vouch for their comfort, spaciousness, and style.

The Details: 12 x 16.5 x 7.5 inches | 1.65 pounds | 23-liter capacity

Why We Love It
  • The thoughtful pocket design in this sling makes it really easy to stay organized, plus the strap has an extra cushioned material for added comfort.

What to Consider
  • More color options wouldn’t hurt.

Sling bags are the perfect option for someone who doesn’t want to fully commit to carrying a large backpack at a theme park, but still wants a majority of their items within reach. The Isabella Sling provides the freedom to move comfortably, navigate crowds effortlessly, and access belongings on the go. During testing, this water-resistant sling performed well when it came to capacity, ease of use, and fit. We love the organized compartments, including a pocket on the strap for easy access to essentials like a wallet or phone, a softer-lined pocket that doesn’t make us feel guilty for throwing in our sunglasses without a case, and a deep inner pocket in the main compartment. The bag’s curved structure and adjustable strap, equipped with a convenient buckle, is suitable for individuals who appreciate a comfortable and customizable fit.

The Details: 14.5 x 9.5 x 5.5 inches | 12 ounces | 9-liter capacity | Water-resistant

Why We Love It
  • This Disney-inspired cooler backpack is perfect for those who want to keep their food, snacks, and beverages chilled for an extended period of time.

What to Consider
  • Cooler bags require some maintenance, so make sure to empty its contents after each use to prevent stains and odors.

We love that Igloo came out with such a trendy and functional bag. While we did not test this product ourselves, several reviewers stated that this cooler helped to keep their food and drinks cool throughout the day, even keeping ice intact toward the park’s closing time. The foam-insulated liner ensures an extended chilling period for both food and beverages. With custom design details featuring Mickey Mouse, including a playful peek from the front and signature ears icon on gold-brushed zipper pulls, this backpack cooler embodies the true original's lovable charm. Additional features such as a built-out front zip pocket and expandable side pockets, while leak-resistant and an antimicrobial liner make it spacious, practical, and easy to maintain.

Tips for Buying a Backpack for Disney

Prioritize comfort

Embarking on a magical adventure to Disney is nothing short of enchanting, but let's face it: the wrong backpack can turn your fairy-tale day into a not-so-happily-ever-after. Opt for a backpack with padded shoulder straps and a supportive back panel to ensure a comfortable fit, especially during long days at the park and potentially hot weather. Look for adjustable straps to customize the fit to your body, and consider additional features like chest and hip straps for added stability. A comfortable backpack allows you to enjoy your day without the distraction of discomfort.

Get an appropriate size for your needs

When selecting a backpack for your Disney vacation, ensure you choose an appropriate size that meets your needs. Consider the essentials you plan to carry, such as water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, souvenirs, and personal items. A backpack that is too small may not accommodate your necessities, while one that is too large could become cumbersome. Look for a size that strikes a balance between spaciousness and manageability, allowing you to comfortably carry your essentials without feeling weighed down. Whether it's a compact daypack or a slightly larger option for extra items, you’ll thank yourself for picking the right size.

Travel + Leisure

Look for water resistance

Disney parks are full of surprises, including unexpected weather changes. Opting for a water-resistant or waterproof backpack helps protect your belongings from sudden rain showers, accidental spills, or water attractions. Look for materials with water-resistant coatings or integrated rain covers to keep your essentials dry and secure, or weatherproof features to ensure your backpack can handle the occasional downpour. Many options on this list are at least water resistant, so your experience won’t be dampened by unforeseen weather challenges.

Travel + Leisure

Think about insulation

Consider insulation as a valuable feature for your Disney backpack, especially if you plan on bringing snacks, drinks, medicine, or any perishable items. Look for backpacks with dedicated insulated pockets or compartments designed to maintain the temperature of your items. This feature not only adds convenience, but also ensures that your refreshments stay enjoyable, especially during warm days at the park. Loose or dry ice is not allowed, and reusable ice packs are recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Does Disney have a size limit for backpacks?

Yes! Pay attention to the dimensions of your backpack (this rule also includes other bags like coolers, totes, suitcases, etc. — with or without wheels) so your Disney experience doesn’t start off on the wrong foot. Backpacks should measure no larger than 24 x 15 x 18 inches to enter Disney World, Disneyland, or any Disney water park. If you choose any backpack from this list, then you’re golden!

  • Can I bring food and drinks into Disney parks?

You are allowed to bring your own food and nonalcoholic beverages into Disney theme parks and water parks, but the main restriction is that you may not bring in glass containers (excluding small containers like baby food jars). Any food that requires heating, reheating, processing, refrigeration, or temperature control, or may have a pungent odor, is not permitted. Also note that loose or dry ice is not allowed, so opt for reusable ice packs instead.

  • What should I bring in my backpack for a Disney park?

A well-packed backpack for a Disney park visit can enhance your experience and ensure you're prepared for a day of fun. Remember to tailor your backpack's contents to your personal needs and preferences. Always check the park's regulations regarding certain items, and be mindful of the weight of your backpack for a comfortable day at Disney.

The top essentials for any bag includes a portable charger, your phone, wallet, hand sanitizer, sunscreen, and any medicine you may need. If your bag fits a larger capacity, bring a water bottle, snacks, a light jacket or sweater, potential rain gear or a small umbrella, and a hat. If kids are on your trip, fill up those diaper bags and larger capacity backpacks with activities to keep them occupied, small toys, or a tablet.
