Sustainable pharmaceutical production

PHARMECO's mission is to make the pharmaceutical industry more sustainable by introducing new, more environmentally friendly manufacturing methods. This will be achieved through the implementation of greener technologies, the integration of sustainability principles in every stage of production, and the harmonization of sustainability evaluations across the sector.

Key aspects of the project include the application of "Sustainable-by-Design" principles in early product development, greener production processes on an industrial scale, and advanced digital tools for sustainability assessment and decision-making.

This groundbreaking project has the potential to not only transform the pharmaceutical industry but also to create a broad positive impact on the environment and society.

Ghent University (CESPE) is coordinating

The "Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Pharmaceutical Engineering and Manufacturing" (CESPE) at Ghent University is a multidisciplinary initiative where UGent researchers from over 20 different research labs and companies collaborate on innovative, forward-thinking solutions for pharmaceutical manufacturing.

CESPE is excited to coordinate PHARMECO over the next six years. Additionally, seven CESPE research groups from Ghent University will actively contribute to this project.
