Distance Learning Authorization and Licensure

  • Distance Learning Authorization and Licensure

The University of Kentucky works to provide courses and programs to students across the state of Kentucky, the country and abroad.

Online courses, field placements, student teaching, research and other similar educational activities may be offered as part of a distance learning or face-to-face program, and may be completed outside of Kentucky.

Distance Learning

Whether a student is enrolled in a distance learning program while residing in another state or country or is enrolled in a face-to-face campus program that involves participation in an educational activity outside of Kentucky, certain regulations will apply. Each state and territory has different requirements for distance learning and or educational activities that may lead to licensure or certification.

Any student who is interested in distance learning or these types of out-of-state educational activities should visit each section below and confirm that their program of interest can be offered, recognized, and/or lead to licensure or certification in their state or territory.

Relocating during the course of a program?

Prospective and current students should keep in mind that licensing and authorization requirements vary by state and that relocating during the course of a program to another state could impact whether that student can continue in the course, meet the eligibility requirements of that state, and/or receive financial aid funding. If students are considering relocating, they should contact their program to check for authorization and licensure eligibility requirements.

SARA Participation

The University of Kentucky is a participating institution of State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA).

This helps ensure quality distance education programs across state lines. Member institutions offer recognized and reputable degree programs, giving students flexibility while working toward their degree and in the job market upon graduation.

NC-SARA Institution Seal of Participation

The University of Kentucky has been approved to participate in State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements.

State Authorization

Can UK offer this program in my state?

State authorization is the permission the University of Kentucky has to offer programs to students in U.S. states and territories.

Programs in licensed fields may not be available in every state due to state board regulations. State professional licensure boards may have additional requirements or restrictions on student field placements, including:

  • Healthcare Clinicals
  • Practicums
  • Internships
  • Student Teaching

Even if the University of Kentucky is authorized or exempt from authorization to provide distance education in your state, there may be limitations for whether you are able to complete your student field placement in your state. Additional information regarding student field placements will be located under the “status” column of the Program State Authorization Map.

Licensure

Does this program meet requirements for licensure in my state?

If you aspire to work in a licensed profession, it is important to understand the different requirements set forth by each state. Each state or territory has different professional licensure and certification requirements. Students who are considering an academic program that may allow them to pursue professional licensure in their state or territory should check their state’s or territory's information and contact the appropriate licensing agency prior to initiating a program application.

The University of Kentucky maintains the Program State Licensure Map to provide licensure information for each state licensure program and state. However, updates are made only after an annual review and may not reflect recent changes to state licensure requirements. Students should always check with their state licensure board to verify current licensure requirements.

To find state board information and program contact information, click and hover your mouse over a state row and the information will appear.

Global Compliance

Prospective applicants interested in enrolling in UK's online programs from countries outside the U.S. should be aware of potential distance learning restrictions in their country of residence. These restrictions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Whether your country recognizes foreign online degrees or credentials from foreign institutions.
  • Whether the program curriculum aligns with the educational prerequisites for regulated professions in your country, such as nursing, social work, teaching, etc.
  • Whether students are subject to withholding taxes on tuition payments made to U.S. institutions.
  • Ensuring the availability of sufficient hardware, software, and internet connectivity to facilitate effective online learning and engagement. Please check the UK Student Hardware & Software Guidelines page for UK’s Distance Learning minimum requirements, as well as the specific requirements outlined by each college/program.

Please note that the University of Kentucky is unable to offer online programs in countries subject to U.S. sanctions or where specific regulatory requirements for foreign online education cannot be met by UK. Additionally, some online licensure programs or graduate-level online STEM programs may not be accessible to overseas students due to field placement requirements. To help you determine if UK’s online programs are available in your country, please check the Global Compliance Map.

Global compliance considerations do not affect students enrolled in University of Kentucky Education Abroad programs. International students physically present in the United States, holding a study-eligible visa, should consult the State Authorization page to determine if their desired online program is available in the state where they will be residing during their studies.
