Administrator Power Travels to Ukraine October 6-13, 2022

Administrator Samantha Power traveled to Ukraine on October 6.  During her trip, she reaffirmed the United States' strong commitment to the country and saw firsthand the impact of Russia’s unprovoked war on the Ukrainian people and the support USAID and its partners are providing.  Since February, USAID has provided $9.89 billion in support to Ukraine.

While in Kyiv, Administrator Power met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and discussed intentions for the United States to begin disbursing the first tranche of the additional $4.5 billion in funding to the Ukrainian government in the coming weeks from legislation passed last week.  She visited areas damaged by Putin’s assault and spoke with local youth and journalists to hear their experiences.  She also traveled to an agricultural site to see firsthand how USAID-supported technology is helping farmers continue their essential work remotely, saving them money and time, while keeping them safe from fields potentially littered with landmines.  Agriculture accounts for nearly 20 percent of Ukraine’s gross domestic product and workforce, and more than 40 percent of its export revenue.  Ukraine alone is the world’s eighth-largest exporter of wheat, fourth-largest exporter of corn, and top exporter of sunflower oil.  Ensuring farmers maintain their planting and harvest schedules mitigates the threat of food insecurity and safeguards the bedrock of Ukraine’s economy.

While viewing damage from Russian missiles on heating infrastructure, Administrator Power announced $55 million in emergency assistance to help Ukraine prepare for winter.  This investment includes repair and maintenance of pipes and other equipment necessary to deliver heating to homes, hospitals, schools, and businesses benefiting up to seven million Ukrainians in 19 regions.  USAID will also provide power generators and alternative fuel sources to hospitals, centers for internally-displaced persons, and shelters for socially vulnerable citizens, ensuring that Ukrainians have access to warm shelter during winter.

Administrator Power also visited Maidan Square, reflecting on the bravery and resilience of the Ukrainian people today and on her visit to the country in 2015.
