Fast Facts:

  • A tropical-like air mass that was extremely rare for October results in a period of very heavy rainfall late Wednesday evening into very early Thursday morning, primarily between 11 PM and 2 AM.
  • The area that saw training...or multiple showers and storms...was DuPage into central Cook County, including the immediate north side of Chicago, where over 2 inches of rain fell.
  • This resulted in flash flooding, especially under viaducts, including those under Lake Shore Drive which resulted in the closure of the major road for nearly two hours.
  • The likelihood of heavy rain and the potential for flooding within the region during this period had been mentioned in the forecast since the weekend.
