Environment
A low pressure system developing over Colorado on Sunday and lifting into eastern Nebraska by early Monday helped to organize an area of thunderstorms that produced widespread severe weather across the Plains during this period. As this low center continued into Iowa on Monday morning, the associated thunderstorms moved ahead into northern Illinois.
By noon on Monday, a warm front stretching east from the low across Illinois into southern Indiana was apparent in surface observations. Soon the thunderstorms began intensifying and becoming more organized along this warm front, with assistance from strong winds at mid and upper levels of the atmosphere.
