Strengthening partnerships across sectors to promote physical activity
The Global action plan on physical activity 2018–2030: More active people for a healthier world calls for engagement across the whole of society to help create the opportunities and places for people to be more active to improve health.
WHO acknowledges the critical roles of the private sector, international sports organizations, academia, nongovernmental agencies and WHO Member States in developing and scaling solutions to harmful levels of physical inactivity. Examples of WHO’s engagement and collaboration across sectors includes work with:
- industry associations such as the World Federations of Sporting Goods Industry (WFSGI) to amplify public health messages, to build and share knowledge, and to further engage the sports sector in promotion of healthy lifestyles and physical activity;
- sports-related industries by convening annual dialogues which helps to identify opportunities to strengthen the promotion of physical activity;
- international sports organizations like the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Commonwealth Secretariat and the International Association Football Federation (FIFA) to strengthen connections across sports and health sectors; build capacity; increase access to community sports for all; support sports centres and events as health promoting settings; and expand the legacy of sport events;
- nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) to connect stakeholders, promote advocacy and disseminate knowledge including the NCD Alliance to strengthen prevention and management of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs); NGOs that promote walking and cycling; and sports medicine, and healthcare-based interventions for physical inactivity; and
- academia and WHO collaborating centres for research synthesis and knowledge translation.
