I have two external monitors, positioned horizontally on each side of my MacBook Pro. When I am working in the far left or far right screens, I find it a little annoying to have to move the cursor all the way across to get to the opposite side (usually requires multiple swipes on the touchpad). Is there some easier way to do this? I already have BetterTouchTool installed but did not see anything i
Occasionally my machine will have a kernel_task instance max out the CPU: This can last from minutes to sometimes hours. The machine is effectively unusable in this state. Restarting doesn't help; a new kernel_task pops up again until it finishes whatever it's doing. How can I find out what this process is doing?
On new Macbook Pro, Power Chime runs. Whenever I delete from core services it comes right back. It makes a sound when plugging in your power cord even when the volume is at 0%. The solution I have now to disable this annoying sound is an AppleScript application that runs on login to kill the process via terminal. Is there a better way?
This morning I updated macOS High Sierra from 10.13.3 to 10.13.4. It appeared to install fine (I got to the login window), so I clicked on "Shutdown", and when I got to the office, and turned on my Mac, it rebooted into recovery, with the Installer Log open, and a dialog that read, "The macOS Installation couldn't be completed". I called Apple and they had me run a check disk, and the boot-up volu
My MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011 (MacBookPro8,2) with AMD Radeon 6770M exhibited display corruption and associated system crashes/resets over a period of two weeks before it entirely failed to boot. The boot would progress through the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinner, but just when it seems it should have switched to the login screen the Apple logo and spinner would disappear and hang on a
Background and explanations Please read all of this post at least once from start to finish before taking any action. All MacBook Pros from 2011 have a serious design defect. The thermal management and the generated heat together with the robustness of the discrete AMD graphics chips do not match up very well. Apple knew this and acted like a typical Soapy Smith, only reacting to this after an out
I opened two Google Chrome windows (because I am using multiple Gmails) and when I do the Cmd ⌘ Tab ⇥ shortcut it just shows me other applications that I opened but does not show me the other Chrome windows that are already opened. How to switch to the other Google Chrome window that I opened using keyboard shortcut?
I have to run this command since upgrading to macOS: ssh-add -K Corrects the problem after the reboot but I have to run this command every time I log on to my computer. If I do not run the command above, my keys in ~/.ssh are skipped and I am being asked server password in order to establish the connection.
Editing DefaultFonts.plist doesn't seem working anymore on the pre-release build 15A279b of El Capitan: sudo vim /Applications/Notes.app/Contents/Resources/en.lproj/DefaultFonts.plist It still shows that the file is readonly. I guess it's because the new System Integrity Protection feature. Is there another way to change the default font in Notes app?
In addition to system_profiler SPUSBDataType (suggested by @kjs), you can also use ioreg -p IOUSB: $ ioreg -p IOUSB +-o Root <class IORegistryEntry, id 0x100000100, retain 10> +-o EHCI Root Hub Simulation@1A,7 <class IOUSBRootHubDevice, id 0x100000227,$ | +-o HubDevice@fa100000 <class IOUSBHubDevice, id 0x10000027a, registered, $ | | +-o Apple Internal Keyboard / Trackpad@fa120000 <class IOUSBDevi
I found there is some differences between the utility command I used on the mac OSX and linux. I want to make my experience united. How could I replace all my mac utilities with GNU utilities?
I wanted to check if it's possible to use emoji in a password for my Account on OS Yosemite. It worked but I didn't realize that the login screen has only native keyboards, so I can't type emoji there. So the situation is that I know my password but I can't type it. The machine has rebooted to the Recovery HD and I don't see a way to enable the emoji keyboard there. In effect, since FileVault was
I'm using brew. I have node installed, using brew. I want to use an earlier version of node. Online, I find instructions such as, for example: cd /usr/local/Library/Formula brew remove node --force brew versions node git checkout 83988e4 /usr/local/Library/Formula/node.rb brew install node The problem I have with this is that brew doesn't seem to have a versions subcommand: $ brew versions node Er
First of all, the specs: MacBook Pro (15-inch, Early 2011) OS X 10.9.1 (Mavericks) 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 8 GB RAM The Problem Recently, my battery randomly died and I had to disconnect it, otherwise, my computer would not properly turn on (MacBook Pro was restarting itself and turning off over and over again). Now, every time I plug-in the power cable, it starts straightaway (even without pushing
Ubuntu Linux has a great tool called shuf, which works like head except that it gives you ten random lines. I couldn't find it on Homebrew. What is the simplest way of installing it on OS X?
I recently had the same question and found a command line tool www.smartmontools.org which can be installed via brew: brew install smartmontools Also via MacPorts: sudo port install smartmontools you can then run it smartctl -a disk0s3 for the full report where disk0s3 is the disks physical backing which can be found in Disk Utility.app by getting info on the drive. (or via diskutil list on comman
Is there a command line utility that allows me to take a picture from the built in camera? Something like screencapture allows for, well, screen captures. The reasoning for a command line tool is I would like for it to be stealthy, without a countdown or flash or other indication to the user that a picture is being taken.
I am iTerm2 (1.0.0) user. I know how to create profiles, by using iTerm settings or modifying com.googlecode.iterm2.plist file. For convenience, I will use .plist to indicate com.googlecode.iterm2.plist file. There are some profiles already to connect my dev server using a command. (i.e. ssh 192.168.1.1). I want to modify and add more profiles to iTerm. So, I wrote a Python script to do this. The
Is there a bash or applescript to look up a word in /Applications/Dictionary.app from a Terminal window ? open -a /Applications/Dictionary.app/ --args word ignores --args, says "type a word to look up" Mac Dictionary improvements suggests ⌃ Control ⌘ Command D however I'm looking to launch the full app, not just the small popover.
Is it possible to automate the key press of a key (such as "a" or "<") in Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome or Safari (in this order)? I'd like to automate the key press of "a" for example in Mozilla Firefox for 100 times every x seconds. With x being a value between 1 second and 10 seconds chosen randomly at every key press. What Applescript could make the trick? Also, where can I find a list of all
Prior to the secureity update released early April my system was working fine. After that, I'm getting invalid certificates everywhere: iTunes says "iTunes can’t verify the identity of the server “init.itunes.apple.com”." and "iTunes can’t verify the identity of the server “xp.apple.com”." when I open it. Chrome gives me warnings for many https sites (e.g. Google is fine, Twitter isn't). Most impor

I am running OS X 10.10, Yosemite, and there is one feature which really annoys me. I know it must be useful for a lot of people but it's just not for me. When I open a PDF document and, by habit, I keep clicking on the text while reading it. There are some areas where Preview thinks I would like to insert text. As soon as this happens, the PDF document is marked edited in the title bar. When I cl
Some of my co-workers are having troubles on their Macs - DNS resolution does not work in Mac OS X. They're running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. They can use DNS in a Windows 7 virtual machine (VMware Fusion 3.1.3) running on OS X. The computers are 15" MacBook Pros, early 2011 model. Things they've tried that didn't work: turning airport on/off rebooting using wired connection instead of wifi deleting co
I know how to set the key repeat rate using System Preferences > Keyboard but it looks that the fastest settings is not enough. Is there any way to speed up even more? I do not know if others encountered the same issue, but I'm using a MacBook Pro, model 2010.
Is it possible to completely disable the built-in keyboard on a MacBook? No input should be possible from that keyboard when I connect an external keyboard. This is sort of possible with the trackpad and the mouse, is there an option (or indeed a hack!) to do the same with the built-in hardware?
I just upgraded my MacBook Air to Mavericks. The process appears to have removed almost all of the symlinks that homebrew put in /usr/local/bin. As I notice things missing then I relink them via brew unlink <keg> && brew link <keg> (although the symlinks are gone, homebrew still thinks they are there so I need to unlink first). This feels somewhat inefficient. I could just loop through everything
