COM Scholarships

Clarence E. and Edna Horn Johnson Endowed Scholarship

The endowment was established to provide scholarships for students who are graduates of a high school located in Pike, Letcher, Harlan or Floyd counties in Kentucky.

College of Communication and Information Endowed Scholarship

Upper Division students only. Established in 1990, these scholarships are awarded to two juniors and two seniors that demonstrate the potential for academic success and show need for financial assistance.

Communication Fund for Excellence

Each year, the Department of Communication offers an Outstanding Senior Award and an Outstanding Junior Award. These awards are based entirely on academic merit. Eligible students will be contacted by the unit to apply for this award. Winners are selected by a faculty committee.

Douglas A. and Carole A. Boyd Professorship in Communication

The Douglas A. and Carole A. Boyd Professorship in Communication (Comm.) was established in 2011 by the former CI dean and his wife Carole. The Boyd Professorship is awarded to a Department of Communication faculty member that holds the rank of associate for full professor, has research interests clearly linked to Communication, has tenure and has made outstanding contributions to social scientific research and graduate education in the field of Communication. The recipient is selected by a committee appointed by the dean of the College.

Enid Waldhart Emergency Fund

This is not a scholarship fund. This is an emergency fund created to honor Dr. Waldhart. Dr. Waldhart retired from the Department of Communication in June 2007. This fund provides support to students currently enrolled in the Graduate Program in Communication to meet emergency needs. The student must hold or have held a teaching assistantship in the Department of Communication or a research assistantship under the direction of a Department of Communication faculty member. The student must express need to the selection committee and complete the application for a short-term loan to cover the emergency or unexpected expense. Those emergencies can include flights/trips home to be with family on death or after learning of a terminal health diagnosis of a family member, personal illness, or for any unexpected or unusual expense they incur while enrolled in the Graduate Program. If approved, the student must agree to complete the UK Short-term loan application and, if the loan is to be repaid, a UK short-term promissory note application. The recipients of the fund are determined by a selection committee.
