The Commercial Space Innovation Institute (CSII) is planned to be a research consortium, also referred to as an innovation alliance, or a public-private-partnership (PPP), comprised of government, industry, and academic research organizations. The CSII research goals include (a) the accomplishment of FAA safety mission goals, and (b) expediting the successful emergence of specific commercial space industry segments. Tasks for safety and industry development research will be proposed by teams of industry and academia actors and selected based on common interests of industry and Government participants.  Although there are many past examples of such innovation consortia, CSII details are still under development.
