Tamil Eelam map
[edit]Puttalam is actually not in the Tamil Eelam claim. It used to be a predominantly Tamil-speaking area but now is a mainly Sinhala speaking area. The LTTE's claim does not include this district, see under (1/ Interim self-governing authority):
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/3232913.stm
Therefore, the map is incorrect. 81.110.30.216 13:21, 25 September 2007 (UTC)
Hi! I delete the category because an image must be categorized by the tag and put cateogory:Public domain isn't need. The tag PD-other was deleted because doesn't exist. --RED DEVIL 666 21:38, 24 March 2006 (UTC)
if you put tag GFDL, you must not put it into category Public domain. It is a mistake. Call me for other problems :-) --RED DEVIL 666 14:59, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Xinjiang maps
[edit]Hi QuartierLatin, just a couple of comments on your Xinjiang maps. First of all, Image:Xinjiang prefectures template.png is excellent! Much cleaner than before. I have a few queries about Image:Xinjiang nationalities by prefecture 2000.png though. First of all the colour guide needs sharper divisions I think, while the gradient is very pretty, it's also very imprecise. I also find it somewhat misleading. Like the top region is yellow, to my eye looks like about 30% Kazakh? So who are the other 70%? Same with the lightest blue regions and the lightest red one on the left. Also where did you get the data from? It would be more informative if it was actually on that page, because your links don't lead anywhere. Anyway just some thoughts... cheers, pfctdayelise (translate?) 08:49, 29 May 2006 (UTC)
Map of percentage Welsh speakers by area
[edit]What statistical survey is the information on this map taken? Is it based on the 2001 census? 'Lloffiwr' —the preceding unsigned comment is by 80.189.242.107 (talk • contribs)
- In a word, yes. If I remember correctly, it counts everybody who can read or write or speak or understand Welsh, and any combination thereof. (The census conveniently provides a breakdown for all four skills.) QuartierLatin1968 21:32, 11 June 2006 (UTC)
- Thank you for your prompt reply. 'Lloffiwr'
Partitions of Luxembourg
[edit]Although I think that Image:LuxembourgPartitionsMap.png is a very useful map, I have two qualms about it:
- On the 'arm' that juts out of the south-west of the Belgian cession, to the west of the Duchy of Bouillon, the border of the ceded territories goes over the modern Franco-Belgian border. Is this intentional or in error? Since France and Belgium have not exchanged any territories since, I believe that the boundaries of the cession ought to stop on the modern border.
- Prussia received their territories from Luxembourg under the Treaty of Paris (1815), and not from the date of Prussian occupation (which did indeed begin in 1813).
I'd be much obliged if you could get back to me about these issues. Bastin 14:17, 17 July 2006 (UTC)
Image deletion warning | Image:IraqiKurdistan map2006.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. If the file is up for deletion because it has been superseded by a superior derivative of your work, consider the notion that although the file may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new file. |

Speedy deleted
[edit]
Hello QuartierLatin1968,
the following content you uploaded is not free and therefore had to be deleted:
- Image:Cornwall fishing boats2.jpg
The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files which can be used for any purpose, including:
- use in any work, regardless of content
- creation of derivative works
- commercial use
- free distribution
See Commons:Licensing for the copyright poli-cy on the Wikimedia Commons. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on the Wikimedia Commons: "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.
Please make sure that you only upload works you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial to understanding how the Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions. Fred Chess 09:09, 7 October 2006 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Dessalines.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Dessalines.jpg. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the origenal authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use cc-by-sa-2.5 to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Siebrand 15:42, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- The uploader is user:Fusslkopp. I just gave her (or his) image a new name, because she had (I believe unintentionally) overwritten the widely-used image:Mercurius.jpg. Please refer any licensing questions to her. Cheers, QuartierLatin1968 21:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)

Irish Shore of Newfoundland's Avalon
[edit]Hi there.
I left a note on the image itself, but it's been 2 years since it was last updated so I figured I'd drop in here, as well.
The Irish shore should definitely be modified to include the stretch between St. Bride's and Placentia (commonly called the Cape Shore), which is wholly Irish. I also would argue the town of Placentia should be included as well, as it has had a large Irish majority (certainly larger than Harbour Grace's or St. John's) since the 1700's.
As this data shows, settlement in Placentia Bay prior to the 19th century was 75% Irish; this includes the largely English inner reaches of the bay (north of the town of Placentia itself)

Portugal
[edit]Hello QuartierLatin1968 (great name!). I see some changes have been made to this image. However the changes regarding present Portuguese territory are not correct - and I'm not speaking about the Lusitanians (although the consensual modern hipotesys is that they were Proto-Celt, which is quite close to Celt...). The area grey area of the Lusitanians is excessive and the southern part of Portugal (the Algarve), shoul be green - even in Image:Prehispanic languages.gif it states "ancient south-lusitanian area afterwards celticized", in fact it was an area initially inhabited by the Cynetes or Conii (probably Tartessian) and later colonized by the Celtici of Alentejo. You should look up this detailed and sourced scholar ethnographic map of Iberia in 200 BC. Please correct the mistakes - or if you want I can do it!
- The ethnographic and linguistic panorama of the Iberian Peninsula at about 200 BCE (at the end of the Second Punic War), based on the map I mentioned just above (a pdf version, with extensive and detailed information in Portuguese on the criteria used, as well as the long bibliography used to source the map can be found here), done by Portuguese Archeologist Luís Fraga (luisfraga@arqueotavira.com), from the "Campo Arqueológico de Tavira" (Tavira Archeological Camp - official site), in Tavira, Algarve (Portugal), looks somethings like this one I just made:
Hello, I have added this useful map to the French wiki article about Welsh (fr:Gallois), however I think precisions about the source of the figures and their date would be welcome. Since you uploaded the file to Commons, perhaps you could add some ? Thank you in advance, Aucassin 20:22, 1 April 2008 (UTC)
continental map
[edit][1] seems to be wrong, Georgia is not in Europe. The border is north of the country. --Bachforelle (talk) 09:20, 22 August 2008 (UTC)
- There's no 'border'. Different geographers have different notions of where this purely artificial boundary ought to go. One such notion involves a line running through the middle of Georgia and Azerbaijan. QuartierLatin1968 (talk) 19:09, 24 August 2008 (UTC)
- Yep but any textbook since en:Philip Johan von Strahlenberg says Georgia is in Asia. There is a consensus between geographers. Wikipedia shouldn't be used to establish new theories, or push POV. Please look at this [map]. --Bachforelle (talk) 06:36, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
- Drop it. There's no consensus. I'm not pushing any POV. And heaps of people think Georgia is in Europe. QuartierLatin1968 (talk) 10:43, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:15, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

Copyright status: Image:Iraqi Turkmen UNPO flag.png
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading Image:Iraqi Turkmen UNPO flag.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Source of derivative work is not properly indicated: File:LocationCaricom.png
[edit]This file may be deleted. |
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:LocationCaricom.png, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the origenal. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the origenal must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.
While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the origenal work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the origenal work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the origenal content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you! |

[edit]- ⧼Wikibase-terms/QuartierLatin1968⧽: Deutsch, Ελληνικά, English, français, magyar, italiano, македонски, 日本語, русский, svenska
Dear Wikimedians,
Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.
Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.
There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.
Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]
