Kevin M. Guskiewicz (/ɡʌs.kəˈwɪts/ GUS-kə-wits; born April 8, 1966) is an American academic administrator, currently serving as the 22nd president of Michigan State University since March 2024.[1] He previously served as the 12th chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 2019 to 2024.[2]

Early life and education

Guskiewicz was born and raised in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.[2] He played football and tennis at Greater Latrobe High School, a public high school in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.[3]

Guskiewicz received a Bachelor of Science with a major in athletic training from West Chester University in Pennsylvania in 1989. He received a Master of Science in exercise physiology/athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh in 1992 and a Doctor of Philosophy in sports medicine from the University of Virginia in 1995.[4]

Guskiewicz later joined the NFL’s head, neck, and spine committee,[5] and collaborated with the NCAA.[6]

Guskiewicz was a neuroscientist, sports medicine researcher, and the Kenan Distinguished Professor at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is one of the Principal Investigators of the Injury Prevention Research Center,[7] and directs the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center.[8] He was a 2011 MacArthur Fellow.[9]

Academic administration

On January 1, 2016, he was appointed as the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[10] On February 6, 2019, he was appointed as interim chancellor.[11] On December 13, 2019, he was appointed as the 12th chancellor of UNC-Chapel Hill by the UNC Board of Governors.[12]

On December 8, 2023 the Michigan State University Board of Trustees unanimously voted to appoint Guskiewicz as the 22nd president of the university, effective on March 4, 2024.[13]

Personal life

Guskiewicz and his wife Amy have four children.[2]
