Name source and etymology
[edit]I was always told at school in Bristol that the name came from the fact that there was a ford across the Avon here and it was the furthest extent of the tidal river, i.e. the water was salty.
There is no mention of this in the article. Furthermore the river is not normally tidal this far upstream.
Does anyone know of a source for this etymology?
An alternative explanation, but one I have never heard, it that it was somehow a ford over the Avon related to salt trade from somewhere.
Therefore I will not update the page, unless someone can provide reliable sources for the name. Lkingscott (talk) 13:41, 6 August 2023 (UTC)
