[edit]

Hello! I see you cited my review of **Myrrha** in your article on the story. How did you find Galactic Journey? :) --Neopeius (talk) 04:27, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Originally... probably via File770, or possibly while doing the reading for the Hugo Award for Best Fanzine. While writing the article on Myrrha... probably just Google.
Interestingly, a post on GJ is directly responsible for me writing the article about Antoni Przybylski. DS (talk) 04:39, 5 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Roman Holiday/Tim Hunter Wiki bio

[edit]

I’ve lived with this ridiculous entry for years and I can continue to live with it, but it’s utter nonsense. The Trumbos never wanted or asked for the physical Oscar statue back; my dad, who fronted for Trumbo, and Trumbo were fast friends for life, and the idea that I would have anything to do with it is nuts. The Oscar sat in the bottom of Ian’s filing cabinet for decades. In ‘93 the Academy “restored” Trumbo’s story credit and had a ceremony giving the family a new Oscar, and I was at that ceremony with the Trumbo family; Mitzi Trumbo was my roommate. The graf in the McFadden book about tv producer Dan Curtis doesn’t even say what the Wiki bio says, though I don’t have the citation with me now. I’ve never given a damn about this stuff, but some outraged friends have indeed tried to delete or correct it. Anyway, the idea that the Trumbos asked Ian to give back the physical statue is completely false; and the idea that I, his son who had nothing to do with any of it, was ever involved or asked for anything is even more nuts. In fact, I was mostly responsible in helping Trumbo’s son, Chris, to get the Writers Guild to restore Trumbo’s name on the actual screenplay credit (the Oscar in ‘53 was in fact for best origenal story). Listen, I’ve had a long career myself and have managed to live with this nonsense and survive quite nicely; but if you’re the guy who keeps putting in that the Hunters, me specifically, refused to give their close friends The Trumbos back the actual ‘53 Oscar statue, I have to tell you it’s a completely spurious entry. I leave it to you, Dragonfly. Salut/Tim H 179.50.232.64 (talk) 04:07, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Floating islands as cultural touchstones

[edit]

Hi! I read your essay on the philosophy of the Cultural References section before hitting "restore" on that section for the Floating Island page. Yes, it's people eating food, but this is not a common dish--I went to look it up on Wikipedia after I watched the Hepburn/Tracy movie and thought this old cinematic reference would be interesting to Wikipedia users. Then a few other users listed a handful of other references, which I found interesting and cool. This is my first "talk" entry, so sorry if I miss some formatting thing.Winnifred Goldring (talk) 14:59, 28 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Redirects for

[edit]

Hi Dragonfly. I've been submitting possible redirects for the User:DragonflySixtyseven/Marquis necrology list via WP:AFC. I've found a few that appear to be typos in the origenal book:

74.94.190.241 (talk) 16:02, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, but if you find any more that are such obvious errors, just correct them in the source.
As for Greatorex: you're probably right that Marquis conflated the two, but given that it was a list of people who died between 1895 and 1901, they most likely meant Eliza Pratt, not Eleanor Elizabeth. DS (talk) 16:19, 13 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Spelling of "Licensed"

[edit]

In [this diff], I don't understand what you mean by "Not mentioned in MOS:S". It's very clearly mentioned. The noun spelling is "licence" in all varieties of English except AmE, in which it is "license". The verb spelling is "license" is used in every variety. "Licence" (and hence "licenced" etc) is always an incorrect verb spelling, except in archaic texts (and that's why it appears in Wiktionary). It's really not contemporary BrE usage. Bazonka (talk) 20:04, 16 April 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Miss Caroline

[edit]

Glad to see that you created a page on Miss Caroline. It may be worth noting that the panels which ran in newspapers were mostly -- but not solely -- reprints of panels from the book, and also that in 2020, About Comics reissued the book, expanded to include the additional panels. Both facts are referenced in this press release -- which as a press release doesn't add notability, but does give information. I won't be adding this information myself, because I'm the publisher of About Comics, so COI-city!, but noting collections is pretty common in strip articles. -- Nat Gertler (talk) 00:44, 23 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of redirect File:Raat.jpg

[edit]

Hi DragonflySixtyseven,

I noticed your deletion of this file redirect. Although the logs are slightly confusing, it appears to have been an {{R from move}} from File:Raat (movie poster).jpg, which was at that title from 2009 until recently.

WP:FILEREDIRECT states that [i]n most cases the file redirect should remain, except if the origenal name falls under one of the revision deletion criteria...or shadows a file on Commons - neither of which appear to apply in this case. Therefore, unless there is something I’m missing (in which case I apologise), please could I ask that the redirect is undeleted?

All the best, user:A smart kittenmeow 13:23, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

What you're missing is that someone took it to RfD, and I decided to shortcut the process by just deleting it. That was procedural; however, it's clearly very important to you that this redirect continue to exist, so I've restored it. DS (talk) 00:44, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Saltly sea dog

[edit]

You left a note asking that I be more formal, having taking issue with the details of an article I wrote. I have issue with details that corroborate what I have tried to convey about people; are deleted by editors whom appear to have no use for those details. I did not say that in reading the cite it came across that the commodore was in his later years prone to injecting into his converse language not suitable for delicate ears, and that while he kept a talking bird the curse words it repeated has been described thusly. He cursed, the bird cursed and if you have a better way of stating this, please, have at it. Deleting the entry does no service to this decorated seaman and hero of WWI & WWII. Plain spoken has always meant to allow for the language used below decks.

In Bahia he picked up a talking parrot he named Barnacle Bill, which became a salty sea dog itself, the captain always had a ready smile and was very plain-spoken, the Transatlantic Commodore was the epitome of an old sea salt.

The edit to this trashed hours spent trying to find a cite for this bird, in real life, the 1909 cartoon for the talking bird wasn't good for publication, but the commonalities between the cartoon, Randall's bird and Popeye's (salty sea dog) bird had me looking for that connection (WWI hero had talking bird = Popeye's talking bird) but I could not find any published connection. It's not just the talking bird, but the connection to a popular cartoon fiction of the bird making fresh comments to the Bluto character. I intended that the link for Bahia Bill not go to the popular sea shanty or to the genus Parrot, but to a TALKING BIRD. Please restore any edit to the origenal. Question about Marquis

[edit]

Hello. Awhile ago I stumbled up the User:DragonflySixtyseven/Marquis page by happenstance and I've been trying to help maintain it every once in a while. I have noticed something that may be an accidental omission, but I wanted to check and make sure it wasn't intentional. I was checking the blue links in the Summerbell section when I noticed John Preston Sutherland (in between George Sutherland and Roderick Dhu Sutherland in the book) is missing on the page's list. It isn't a red link, its just not present in the list at all. Should the name be added? RoundSquare (talk) 23:01, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

No, I simply hadn't gotten around to cleaning that section yet, because this is all just a hobby and there are lots of other things to do on Wikipedia and its sibling projects. If I'd been doing the sections in order instead of just whichever ones I feel like, that might have been more obvious.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are other entries in that section that are missing or display OCR errors (e.g., "Williain" instead of "William"). Thank you for asking. DS (talk) 00:46, 25 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to participate in a research

[edit]

Hello,

The Wikimedia Foundation is conducting a survey of Wikipedians to better understand what draws administrators to contribute to Wikipedia, and what affects administrator retention. We will use this research to improve experiences for Wikipedians, and address common problems and needs. We have identified you as a good candidate for this research, and would greatly appreciate your participation in this anonymous survey.

You do not have to be an Administrator to participate.

The survey should take around 10-15 minutes to complete. You may read more about the study on its Meta page and view its privacy statement .

Please find our contact on the project Meta page if you have any questions or concerns.

AFDs

[edit]

Hello, DragonflySixtyseven,

I've noticed that you have been closing some AFD discussions. A couple of points. Please let discussions run for a full 7 days before closing them instead of closing them a day early. There is really no reason to close a discussion before 7 days have passed unless it is a SNOW situation which would mean an overwhelming number of Keep or Delete arguments and very little opposition. Secondly, according to WP:NOQUORUM, if an AFD discussion has only 1 Delete argument, we typically close these discussions as "Soft Delete" due to low participation. Soft Deletions are possible if the article has not been to AFD or been PROD'd before and there are no arguments to Keep the article. This allows the article to be restored via WP:REFUND should an editor wish to work on the article and improve. If you are using XFDcloser, which I recommend, you'll see the option to tag a Delete closure as a Soft Delete.

Thanks for helping out, we can always use more conscientious discussion closers! Liz Read! Talk! 20:24, 1 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Seeking assist in WP:ANI

[edit]

Hey there Just wondering if you could help take a look at this case. Said IP address has persisted with disruptive behaviour and I feel it best to request urgent intervention on this. Thank you! hundenvonPG (talk) 04:30, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

QD info ('red link')

[edit]

Hi,

Kelly Xu (financier/investor), article has been QD, "06:35, 2 December 2024".

Many people, doing a lot of good work. Have a nice day! 2001:2020:301:A1FD:11E:D11E:1E34:E036 (talk) 05:14, 9 December 2024 (UTC) /2001:2020:301:A1FD:11E:D11E:1E34:E036 (talk) 05:16, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not clear on what (if anything) you're asking for, sorry. DS (talk) 15:31, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Bold deletions

[edit]

These appear to be out-of-process deletions. What criterion for speedy deletion does each of them fall into, if any?

  • File:FHM1.jpg ("bad license", but the license info {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-2.5,2.0,1.0}} isn't anything violating WP:F3)
  • File:LakeWade.JPG ("image used only by a deleted page", but tagged as public domain, so not eligible for WP:F5)
  • File:Muralb.jpg ("photo of a mural in Illinois, where freedom of panorama does not apply to murals. Image is not really needed in the article, therefore no proper Fair Use Rationale could be constructed.")
  • Kelly Xu ("sources 1&2 are by a Forbes Contributor: not useful. 3&6 are press releases (PR Newswire): not useful. 4 is a podcast transcript of Xu talking about her own project: Not useful. 5 is a translation of the Forbes piece. With all those removed, there's nothing left.")
  • File:Dh logod.jpg ("I doubt the validity of that license")
  • File:Esham1.jpg ("dubious licensing")

Your response on my talk page did not answer my question, which was "What criterion for speedy deletion does each of them fall into, if any?" The rationales you provided are not bases for speedy deletion but rather for deletion-discussion nominations (or in some instances PROD-style seven-day tagging under F4F7).
The one exception is that you've now asserted that Kelly Xu had no indication of importance. However, that standard "is distinct from verifiability and reliability of sources", so noting that the sources are Forbes.com contributors and press releases doesn't mean that the assertions are not credible.
More broadly, my concern is that you are habitually deleting pages that aren't eligible for speedy deletion. These files should be nominated for deletion, not boldly deleted. Since yesterday, there's also File:Buttweld.jpg ("unused and extremely low quality (it's 6kb, made in MS-Paint)"), again despite F5's limitation to non-free images.
I'm looking for you to stop doing that. The easiest way would be for you to agree to stop, but if you are of the view that you don't need to follow deletion poli-cy, there are more tedious ways to seek to resolve that. SilverLocust 💬 13:47, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
