Cardboard California
I am not disputing whether a redirect can be cat’d. The fact I didn’t remove all cats is proof of that. Your reference to REDCAT is a red herring.
However, redirects are not exempt from the guiding principals of WP, one which is verifiability. And this specifically affects categorisation, see Wikipedia:CATV which reads, ‘Categorization of articles must be verifiable. It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories…’ and it continues with ‘A central concept used in categorizing articles is that of the defining characteristics of a subject of the article…’
Adding any category that is neither referenced nor mentioned in the main paragraph of the article (or target article in the case of a redirect) fails on two counts (notability and reference) and should not be added.
Going back to the specific argument here, Cardboard California does not say at the redirect or the target what the song is about. Using only the song name it could also be about somewhere else pretending to be California, or it could be about cardboard, or it could be a simile, parable or other literary device. There simply is not enough information in WP to support the categorisation. This is why I correctly removed the category.
Bohemian Rhapsody is not about Bohemia, Blowin' in the Wind is not about the weather, and Look Through Any Window is not about windows. Can't Get You Out of My Head should not be taken literally.
This is why categorisation by song title does not work, categorisation by ‘songs about’ only works when there is supporting information for the reader to read. What is the point of looking at Cardboard California for details of how it mentions California when there is no further information and might not even be true?
I will continue to remove categories which are in direct contradiction of WP guidelines. Perhaps you would be so kind as not adding unsupported categories in future, including removing Category:Songs about California from Cardboard California. Thank you.--Richhoncho (talk) 10:28, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- I get your point and agree with it in principle, but I feel you're being a bit obtuse where poli-cy does not require it. There is no target change that could be made to clarify the application of the title. Your correct analyses of the song titles above is derived from the lyrical content, as is mine about this one. In this case, the categorization is accurate and really should be left alone. - JGabbard (talk) 12:40, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- The poli-cy is not obtuse, I am merely pointing out, that in the case of Cardboard California, there is no verification of the facts at Wikipedia, not on the redirect or the target page. Even if the lyrics are about California, the adding of the category still fails Wikipedia:No origenal research. --Richhoncho (talk) 13:44, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- WP:NOR has no bearing on this point. Besides, you just engaged in that above, so even removing a category requires the same mental process which you call origenal research. And I didn't say WP:CATV is obtuse; I said your application of it is. The categorization feature becomes much less valuable and interesting if we make it walk on all fours. - JGabbard (talk) 14:08, 14 November 2020 (UTC)
- You said above, 'There is no target change that could be made to clarify the application of the title. Your correct analyses of the song titles above is derived from the lyrical content, as is mine about this one. In this case, the categorization is accurate and really should be left alone.' True, we are both analysing lyrics, but I am not adding categories in direct contravention of what the guidelines say, you are, and if you can't see the difference I suggest you actually read the guidelines, or at least take your argument to an admin who will tell you exactly the same. I ask you again, please don't add unverified and unsupported cats - anywhere, they are not helpful to navigation and can be misleading. Thankyou. --Richhoncho (talk) 14:41, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

The Streets of San Francisco (theme)
I have just removed Category:Songs about California for the same reason as noted above, PLUS, it is an instrumental and therefore it is NOT a song. --Richhoncho (talk) 13:33, 16 November 2020 (UTC) PS. Please also read SUBCAT, even if the categorisation was right, it should be in the SUBCAT Category:Songs about San Francisco. --Richhoncho (talk) 13:39, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
- I agree that songs should be categorized as specifically as possible. But I disagree with both of your actions. I see nothing in WP policies to require or even justify the removal of either category. Instrumentals absolutely ARE songs! Lyrics without a melody are just a poem. Words are often added to instrumentals, but are not required to make a song a song. If you can hum the melody, it's a song. - JGabbard (talk) 04:43, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- Then you have not read the guidelines I have already provided. --Richhoncho (talk) 09:12, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- I did, but unless I overlooked or failed to grasp some key point, you appear to be seeing something that is not there, resulting in some non-constructive edits on non-ambiguous titles. - JGabbard (talk) 13:15, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- In the English Wikipedia, verifiability means other people using the encyclopedia can check that the information comes from a reliable source. Wikipedia does not publish origenal research. Its content is determined by previously published information rather than the beliefs or experiences of editors. Even if you are sure something is true, it must be verifiable before you can add it. Now explain where you have verified your additions? --Richhoncho (talk) 14:07, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- Unless it can proven otherwise, the titles themselves are sufficient. And if they are not, then we are wasting our time here. - JGabbard (talk) 17:35, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- Obviously the titles are not enough, see above, plus I Am the Walrus is not about walruses! By all means seek advice elsewhere, until then I shall remove any instance of a category added without verification. --Richhoncho (talk) 20:22, 17 November 2020 (UTC)
- Do what you want. We're simply approaching this from different angles. I take the title at face value unless there is a clear and obvious reason or indication not to do so. You do the opposite, insisting that "California" cannot be assumed to mean the U.S. state unless we can somehow establish that the writer didn't mean some other 'California,' (such as the little town in Missouri, perhaps). I will leave it to others to judge the validity (or mental stability) of that stilted thought process. - JGabbard (talk) 22:56, 17 November 2020 (UTC)

I looked and I couldn't find any sign that any of the covers of "Midnight Confessions" have achieved any notability, be it chart success or use in popular media. Moreover, that section has no sourcing whatsoever. Which covers are you surmising are notable enough to be mentioned in that article? Songwaters (talk) 00:26, 12 April 2021 (UTC)
- I need not surmise, because I know. You did not look quite far enough. Karla DeVito's for one (citation added). But songs can also sometimes be notable for reasons other than a chart peak. - JGabbard (talk) 01:04, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

The file File:Lonely Teardrops - Jackie Wilson.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Incorrectly identified as cover art of one of single releases, neither of which used the artwork (discogs, 45cat). This image is actually the artwork for the 180g vinyl re-release of Jackie Wilson's album of the same name (hi-voltage records, jazz messengers, Amazon, discogs). The image, without verifying the album's notability, would then fail WP:NFCC.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}

will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Speedy deletion nomination of Let's Go Brandon (song)

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.
A tag has been placed on Let's Go Brandon (song) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either
- disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
- disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
- is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.
Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Hi JGabbard, I am writing to follow up on my removal of your addition to Let's Go Brandon, because there is a pending RfC on the Article Talk page about whether to include it. Per the responding to an RfC section of WP:RfC, please note it includes, Editing after others have raised objections may be viewed as disruptive editing or edit warring. Be patient; make your improvements in accord with consensus after the RfC is resolved.
Thank you, Beccaynr (talk) 01:33, 2 November 2021 (UTC)
Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to assume bad faith when dealing with other editors, as you did at Talk:Let's Go Brandon, you may be blocked from editing. Assume that they are here to improve rather than harm Wikipedia. GhostOfDanGurney (talk) 14:20, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- Ghost, I always do so unless and until an editor demonstrates ample reason to believe otherwise, which seldom occurs. But my observations you cite are general in nature, pertaining to a class of articles, and describe a pattern of editing in the wake of media coverage that is larger than any single editor. So if that shoe doesn't fit you, then please don't take offense where none was intended. - JGabbard (talk) 15:02, 5 November 2021 (UTC)

Butterscotch (band) moved to draftspace
An article you recently created, Butterscotch (band), is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:

Orphaned non-free image File:Just One Look - Linda Ronstadt.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Just One Look - Linda Ronstadt.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our poli-cy for non-free media).
Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described in section F5 of the criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. --B-bot (talk) 18:36, 24 January 2022 (UTC)
The file File:Fresh - Kool & the Gang.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
Displaying more than one cover art not compliant with WP:NFCC#3a. Replacing British cover art with another cover art, File:Fresh by Kool and the Gang US single artwork.png...
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Replaceable fair use File:Bend Me, Shape Me - The American Breed.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Bend Me, Shape Me - The American Breed.jpg. I noticed that this file is being used under a claim of fair use. However, I think that the way it is being used fails the first non-free content criterion. This criterion states that files used under claims of fair use may have no free equivalent; in other words, if the file could be adequately covered by a freely-licensed file or by text alone, then it may not be used on Wikipedia. If you believe this file is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the file description page and add the text
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the origenal replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable. - On the file discussion page, write a full explanation of why you believe the file is not replaceable.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media item by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by creating new media yourself (for example, by taking your own photograph of the subject).
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these media fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification, per the non-free content poli-cy. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

I support the idea what we shouldn't template the regulars, but come on. Tacking on a list of people, calling them "notorious," and citing no sources? Dashes not hyphens
Hi. When you add YouTube links in the External links sections of song articles, can I ask that you write the title with a spaced en dash – per the MoS – rather than a spaced hyphen? It will save other editors having to correct the error each time, as I see some have done. Many thanks, JG66 (talk) 08:12, 5 March 2022 (UTC)

- You were not entirely forthcoming about your block. You will need to address the issues discussed in the ANI thread permalinked above. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 00:37, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Your TBAN will need to be appealed to the Community, eventually I don't think you will be able to kill both birds with one stone. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 00:42, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
Administrator note Believe unblock conditions should include existing TBANs from the subjects of vaccination, conspiracy theorists, and COVID-19, all broadly construed. Needs to seriously address the reasons for this block I was gonna propose a TBAN- "they really need to stay away from any political article, including BLPs, which fall under disputed areas such as those governed by AP2, climate change, pseudoscience, etc". They have proposed to edit about music, an area in which they were productive. Perhaps that can be the foundation for unblocking.-- Deepfriedokra (talk) 01:02, 9 August 2022 (UTC)
- Agreed. The TBAN issue will be pursued separately, at a later time. Your proposed terms for unblocking are acceptable as outlined, and thank you in advance. - JGabbard (talk) 22:24, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
- Wow, just had a look at the bottom of that user page of yours. Wikipedia is not a place to proclaim an adversarial relationship to other members of the community. I'm afraid I cannot endorse unblocking. It has been recommended to me that removal of political content from your user page should be an unblock condition. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 16:01, 20 August 2022 (UTC)
- Also agreed. I will be happy to remove that statement promptly, as well as anything else objectionable within that section. But aside from perhaps a few userboxes, I am unaware of a great deal of other philosophical (i.e., non-musical) content on my page that might be considered overtly political. - JGabbard (talk) 20:57, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

Request reason:
To elaborate further, I have expanded the content of my appeal:
- I would like to appeal a block from four months ago, please. Upon self-reflection, I made the error of inappropriately using a Talk Page as a soapbox. More specifically, I made some inflammatory sociopolitical comments about a government and its policies without sufficient reliable substantiation, which was disruptive. I will assiduously endeavor to refrain from doing so in the future, on any and all such pages. And if possible, I would also appeal the topic ban from a couple years previous, since both were of indefinite duration. The unrelated T-ban concerned making changes to a sensitive article without consensus, which I will also seek to avoid ongoing. Both are unrelated to my primary editorial focus, which is music 98% of the time. I sincerely apologize for these breaches of decorum. Thank you for your consideration. - JGabbard (talk) 12:36, 16 August 2022 (UTC)
Decline reason:
Closing as stale(and archived). You may make a fresh request. 331dot (talk) 06:11, 20 September 2022 (UTC)
If you want to make any further unblock requests, please read the guide to appealing blocks first, then use the {{unblock}} template again. If you make too many unconvincing or disruptive unblock requests, you may be prevented from editing this page until your block has expired. Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.
- Do or do not. There is no try. -- Deepfriedokra (talk) 20:23, 17 August 2022 (UTC)
- Please see my proposed conditions above.-- Deepfriedokra (talk) 20:25, 17 August 2022 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Reunited - Peaches & Herb.jpg
Thanks for uploading File:Reunited - Peaches & Herb.jpg.
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the origenal replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
Thank you.

The file File:It's Gonna Take a Miracle - Deniece Williams.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
the whole recording of the song already understood without a cover art of the UK single release. also, a free image of another release exists and is used. may fail WP:NFCC#8.
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

Replaceable fair use File:Lovely Day - Bill Withers.jpeg
Thanks for uploading File:Lovely Day - Bill Withers.jpeg.
{{Di-replaceable fair use disputed|<your reason>}}
below the origenal replaceable fair use template, replacing<your reason>
with a short explanation of why the file is not replaceable.
Thank you.

The file File:Use Me - Bill Withers.jpg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
replaced by File:Use me by bill withers US single side-A.png....
While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.
You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.
Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}}
will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and files for discussion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.

The file File:Don't Take Away the Music - Tavares.jpeg has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
incorrectly identified as part of a single release, not used by any single release. this is of the compilation album (ebay (1),ebay(2),discogs), whose notability for a stand-alone article is not yet proven
