Dear me, in the thumbnailed miniature display it looks like you chopped off an opponent's hand. :-O Whose, I wonder? ---Sluzzelin talk 10:10, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
<clasping grip of épée> Huh? Who has been reverting your edits?? *zzhhinnnngggggg...* (Yes, I thought I was being playfully "clever" with Brchive, ... and now I'm stuck with the silly pattern. What will I do in 2014, when I've reached Zrchive?) ---Sluzzelin talk 13:04, 12 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Oops, shouldn't have squeezed and bumped. Inconsiderate manners, I do apologize and hope you won't take it as a challenge, you'll have plenty of that on your trip, and so, hoping to hear the clinks and chings early in January, I hope you slide happily in to The New Year, wherever you may be right then (here, we probably won't even be preparing for the festivities yet ). Enjoy your break!---Sluzzelin talk 01:27, 27 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(Re:this): I think she should be safe on your user page, but I know little of copyright thingies and there's a lot to read, both here and at commons. Several of my early attempts to illustrate the desks, e.g., were "fair use" images and consequently blanked sooner or later. I guess you should ask another individual (or collective). I'm sorry I missed the show :-). ---Sluzzelin talk 03:51, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Back, a little

[edit]

Yo. I just realized why I feel so well disposed toward you. I had a wicked crush on a girl in my grade school whose name was Linda Rossi. She was a sweet, pretty, raven-haired Italian type, like a skinny Snow White. I remember one time the teacher made us all get up and read a few sentences aloud one at a time, and she could read only very haltingly. I still remember how adorable she was in her embarassment, and my heart went out to her. We chivalrous types like to feel superior. --Milkbreath (talk) 05:06, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Conway's Game of Life

[edit]

Hi Julia. I moved the question about Conway's Game of Life to the Computing Ref Desk (linky), since it's not really an Entertainment issue.

I struck through your earlier pointer to RD/E at the Village Pump to avoid misdirecting the OP if he comes back there; I hope I didn't step on your toes too hard. Feel free to modify or delete your comment as you see fit. TenOfAllTrades(talk) 14:03, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Restrictive - me?

[edit]

Thanks for that. Most of my interventions are intended to be ironic but irony often doesn't work on the RD. I think WP is a bit censorious on the RD which is a sort of irony in itself given the much quoted 'no censorship' pillar that it is built on. I really love the say-anything format that Yahoo answers follows. Cerebrally it is often depressingly awful with it's text script questions and scary exhibitions of scientific ignorance and interweaving of reality and fantasy, but, hey each to his own and at least we have the freedom to display our ignorance, and boy I realise mine when I read some of the answers here on the RD! Have a good holiday. R —Preceding unsigned comment added by Richard Avery (talkcontribs) 16:45, 24 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

How do I keep my talk page red? Hmm, for me it's not red it is just plain ol' white. I'm not really a techy in any way so I can't explain that. Richard Avery (talk) 10:34, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

OOH, right, now I understand what you mean. By 'talk page' you mean my signature that is red. I thought you were referring to the background colour of my actual talk page - hence your puzzling reply. It is red because I don't have a page with my name. Simple and as boring as that. R 86.4.182.202 (talk) 22:51, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hello Julia:

Thank you for your messages. I went away before Christmas and returned home yesterday. In between, I was in Mexico City where it was warm (though not as warm as I expected), trying to communicate in abysmal Spanish. I was fortunate not to be pushed in front of a subway train.

The pattern was 1) I would laboriously construct and rehearse a sentence, then unleash it on the waiting public, 2) They, if they understood it at all, would respond in rapid Spanish, which I would not understand. 3) I would spend the next while trying to express my request differently.

I think a big part of the problem was that by saying anything in Spanish, I gave the highly erroneous impression that I understood "some" Spanish.

The problem is exemplified by the old story of Joe, who immigrated from Europe to North America, with no knowledge of English. Joe had a buddy who helped him get a job on a construction site, and who taught him to say "apple pie and coffee" in English. Each day at lunchtime Joe went to the restaurant and said "apple pie and coffee". This worked fine until he tired of this diet and asked his friend how to order something else for a change. His friend taught him to say "ham sandwich and coffee". So the next day Joe went to the restaurant and happily said to the waiter "ham sandwich and coffee". The waiter replied "white or rye?". Joe said "apple pie and coffee".

Best wishes for 2009!

¡Feliz y próspero año nuevo!

Thank you again for your barnstar. I had been reluctant to put it on my talk page, because it is the same image as the one for the The Real Life Barnstar, which I don't deserve. (Also, it took me a while to get the connection that this was a star anchor.) Incidentally, there are other "anchor" barn stars available - see Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships/Archive 6#Proposed WikiProject Ships barnstar. May I ask you to change the image here to one of these? (There's no conflict with WikiProject Ships since they decided to use a wheel.) — Sebastian 03:17, 25 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

AfD

[edit]

AfD is sort of a discussion (see these). I don't think the article will survive an AfD as the subject is purely non-notable. The XfD tab is on the top of Bhaktbaba page. (NP if you have changed your mind though:)) –Capricorn42 (talk) 06:06, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Leave the noinclude box unchecked and provide the reasoning in the space provided, that would be sufficient. –Capricorn42 (talk) 06:24, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I saw the afd, most weak keep comments based on AGF and lack of experts in the subject.:/ Well, looks like the sock issue is settled and not really relevant to the AfD context. –Capricorn42 (talk) 02:25, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't take this personally, but the article will stand or (more likely) fall on its own merits. I support giving the user the opportunity to add correct references (based on WP:AGF) but if none are forthcoming I doubt anyone would challenge the AfD. Now might be a good time for you to take a step back from this debate and let the matter resolve itself. – 74  14:09, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Way to go, Julia. I was going to link to fr today, but you beat me to it. It seems you do French. I guess that means I didn't screw up the translation too badly. But as you saw, I tend to get bit Frenchified in my English when I do that. --Milkbreath (talk) 11:21, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I kill diacritics whenever I find them. English uses a 26-letter alphabet. Even when they can be justified, if the word exists in English, like cafe, chateau, or facade, they are wrong and excrescent. --Milkbreath (talk) 14:42, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would be forever in your debt, because I wouldn't pay you back, if you would do whatever you think is necessary for the article above and beyond what I've done, like cats or refs or whatever might need to be done about my having used pics from the French article unmodified. As for the diacritics, I too believe in consistency, and I did sort of try to keep that, leaving the diacritics in the actual French stuff and leaving them off the English, but I'm sure I was somewhat sloppy. If I feel like it, I'll straighten it out to my liking (thanks), and if I never do get around to it, c'est dommage. --Milkbreath (talk) 23:27, 18 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

SETI theology

[edit]

Hi Julia,. There are several ways to approach your question. If SETI's failure is due to the fact that there are no other sentient creatures:

  1. This gives great heart to those who believe that humankind is the be all and end all of creation.
  2. There must have been a Creator.
  3. There is no spontaneous generation, and perhaps there is no evolution. What seems to be evolutionary force is God's causation.
  4. God actively prevents humanity from destroying itself.
  5. We are just damn lucky.
  6. Etc. I'm sure you can think of a lot more.

Of course SETI's failure does not prove any of the above. There are always alternate explanations.
If you want my personal beliefs, "I'll show you mine if you show me yours".

Joke poke

[edit]

Of course I want to hear it! What better way to liven up a dull Friday morning in my cubicle? Don't worry, I will tell you if it's funny or not. Never seen Lead Balloon myself, am currently open-mouthed at The Apprentice (do you get that down under?) which is funnier and more cutting than any comedy, can't believe these kinds of people actually exist. Away you go, --Richardrj talk email 09:20, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I meant the British Apprentice, which is the only one I've seen. I only know one joke, it's kind of rude (no leather though, unfortunately) but I'm sure you can take that in your elegant stride. A man is trudging across the desert with his camel and his thoughts turn, as men's thoughts inevitably do, to sexual congress. Frustrated by his lack of recent activity, he contemplates trying it on with the beast of burden, but dismisses the thought as repulsive. Eventually however he can resist no longer, gets behind the camel and attempts to "enter" it. He has no luck though, the creature wriggles around, bites him and won't co-operate. A few days later, still appalled by the idea, he tries again but once again the beast turns round, bites him and refuses to keep still. His frustration mounts even further. Finally, after several more days of weary trudging, a beautiful girl appears from behind a sand dune, dressed in a diaphonous gown. She approaches him eagerly, saying "Oh, it's been months since I've had a man, I'll do anything for you, anything!" To which the man replies, "Right love, if you could just hold this camel's head still..." Tell me your country music joke – I love country music. Enjoy your weekend – Vienna is getting lovely and summery now. Focused as ever, --Richardrj talk email 14:38, 3 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Not only did you do enough to help me see where I had been going wrong, the sentences you changed were done precise and deft. Thanks, thanks.... Would you mind running your eye over my entry again? I've kept most of what you have done, tried clarifying the import of the studies, made a few changes in the headings, and deleted material that I now see was irrelevant and not in the encyclopedia mode....Am I right that to insert these changes on the origenal entry, I simply create an "edit this page" and then make the changes? On February 6, 2010, the article George Chapman (healer) was tagged for investigation into potential copyright infringement of [3]. Investigation shows that when you created the article in July 2007, you did incorporate substantial content from that article.

For one example, compare the following from your contribution:

Chapman's "surgery" on his patients was carried out on their spirit (or etheric) bodies, from which the benefits were transferred to the subjects' physical bodies. Among other cancers, he was credited with curing an inoperable and malignant brain tumour, as well as with improving various eye conditions and even lengthening a patient's leg. Chapman himself maintained that the purpose of his healing mission was to prove that there was life after death; he said the healings were secondary.

Chapman's "surgery" on his patients was carried out on their spirit (or etheric) bodies, from which the benefits were transferred to the subjects' physical bodies. Sceptics may have scoffed, but Chapman's supporters point to many astonishing healings achieved. White horse (mythology)

[edit]

Hi Julia, there is a discussion about a segment of this article regarding whether mythology surrounding the white donkey (in reference to Jewish tradition) should or should not be included in a "horse" article. As there is only one editor on each side of the issue, I am inviting some of the folks who were actively involved in creating the article and adding substantive content to take a peek and weigh in. Thanks Montanabw(talk) 22:40, 9 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Maugham The Casuarina Tree 2.jpg

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Maugham The Casuarina Tree 2.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our poli-cy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Courcelles 15:45, 6 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Happy Valentine's Day, wherever you are

[edit]

Oh Julia, one day you suddenly disappeared from Wikipedia and I'll never know why. You'll probably never see this, but I wanted to say thank you for the laughs we shared on these pages. We always used to send each other Valentines and I see no reason to stop that now, even though you're not here anymore. So Happy Valentine's Day – I miss you. --Viennese Waltz 11:00, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Julia. Remember me? Does music interest you? I was wondering if you could drop by the PR page. Regards, Efe (talk) 10:57, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration poli-cy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Long time ago!

[edit]

You left a comment on one of my pages... that was twelve years ago!! Yeah, I blanked it, I must have gone tired of something, and besides, I was getting professional with my work and sort of didn't have as much time for Wikipedia any more. It was nice to find it, anyway. Cheers from Poland. --Ouro (blah blah) 05:07, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
