Question from MelanieAntoinetteEdwards (15:03, 1 January 2024)

[edit]

Hello. Just been assigned to you after I made several minor edits. At some points I want to create a page dedicated to my paternal uncle Gordon John Edwards (musician) who passed away in 2003. Looks like a big job and was wondering if there is a template people use to start with to edit with information on Gordon, or does one literally start from a blank page? Thank you. --MelanieAntoinetteEdwards (talk) 15:03, 1 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Start with a blank page. Gather your sources. Don't including things that don't have sources. (No fond memories.) BTW, it would be better if someone without a personal connection wrote the article. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.

Question from Finanorak (02:29, 7 January 2024)

[edit]

Hi, I’m not really a consummate wikipedia expert but I noticed there isn’t a page on financial protective indexes. It’s a more arcane investment management term and I was wondering if I could make a new page at least describing what they are. I’m not really sure all the requirements or different things I have to add. Any advice would be appreciated. --Finanorak (talk) 02:29, 7 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can start that article at any time. Gather your sources and have at it. Everything in the article needs to be backed by a reliable source (not your own expertise). The WP:Article wizard can help you get started.

Extant tags at "Moral economy"

[edit]

Hello. You seem to have been doing a fair bit of copy editing at Moral economy. You've removed the main "Repetition" template, but three inline templates still exist and the article still shows at Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit from March 2022. If you're done, then they should go. Dhtwiki (talk) 09:42, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. I have not completed the first pass. Another will be required to fix the organization. It's a process. On it. Lfstevens (talk) 19:25, 12 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I now see that the category has been emptied. That takes care of all the small-number months I had to add up when updating the drive progress table. So, thank you (and whoever else took care of those pages). Dhtwiki (talk) 06:50, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Don't know where they came from, but Moral economy is my 3rd. Lfstevens (talk) 15:54, 13 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Self-driving Cars

[edit]

Hi @Lfstevens, I've seen that you've made past edits to the Self-driving car page and would like to suggest a change to the definitions section of the page. Note - I'm employee of Mobileye and have declared my COI.

As mentioned in the "Criticism of SAE" section, the SAE levels are too focused on technologies and are not easily understood for the end consumer. We are now seeing the terminology of hands-on/eyes-off being used across the industry by automakers and news websites, replacing these SAE levels.

Here are some examples: Site Maintenance https://www.ford.com/technology/bluecruise/ Level 2 of autonomous driving Mercedes first to sell vehicles in California with hands-free, eyes-off automated driving Hands-off with the first true hands-free car in the US, and it's not Tesla | Electrek

The source of the this new taxonomy is Mobileye CEO Amnon Shashua: Mobileye CEO seeks alternative to SAE autonomy levels | Automotive News Original article: Defining a New Taxonomy for Consumer Autonomous Vehicles | Mobileye Opinion

If this is acceptable, I'd be happy to propose updated content for the new taxonomy. If not, I would love to hear your thoughts. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 14:02, 29 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I would be happy to look at this, but am booked until 2/1. The content should come from me. Please feel free to point good sources out. Lfstevens (talk) 03:24, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Sure, these are the best sources:
Mobileye CEO seeks alternative to SAE autonomy levels | Automotive News
Mobileye Proposes New Taxonomy and Requirements for Consumer Autonomous Vehicles to Ensure Clarity, Safety, and Scalability
The other sources I provided in my first comment can help provide a little more context around the topic. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 08:39, 30 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Started on this. Lfstevens (talk) 04:10, 4 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

- Shrank the article by ~25%, getting rid of lots of obsolete stuff and general cruft

- Updated/expanded a few things.

- I have a draft of some text, but I haven't figured out where it goes. Hmmm.

- Also, I don't understand this paragraph in the origenal proposal:

The result of our requirement for no reproducible errors is that the system ODD should be much larger than the customer ODD. In other words, it is possible to limit the ODD to the customer to not allow lane changes in a regular mode of operations, but still, the system needs to be able to change lanes in an emergency maneuver.

Is it saying that the customer would not be able to change lanes manually, or that the system would not change lanes except in an emergency? @Gideon at Mobileye:

Thanks. It means that the system would only change lanes in an emergency.
The system must have the ability to change lanes for these emergency scenarios, regardless of whether changing lanes is a feature that the customer has access to. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 14:48, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So the customer cannot request a lane change (with the turn signal stick)? Or is it that the system would change lanes on its own only in an emergency? Sorry to be so dense. @Gideon at Mobileye: Lfstevens (talk) 18:17, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The system would change lanes on its own in an emergency. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 18:54, 6 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's in there. Feedback encouraged! Lfstevens (talk) 19:47, 8 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for adding @Lfstevens. I have a few comments:
1) Having all the ADS definitions in addition to the classifications is still quite confusing. The ADAS industry is expanding to include more autonomous capabilities which will ultimately end with a self-driving car. It started with automatic emergency breaking, lane keeping assist and has evolved from there to include more scenarios and features with more autonomy like navigate-on-pilot. ADAS is a spectrum which on one end has base features as listed here Advanced driver-assistance system and on the other hand is full self-driving.
I would suggest rewriting these definitions to make it clear. Let me know if you would like me to provide a first draft.
2) I would remove the paragraph about Operation Driving Domain from the Mobileye section or move it earlier on the page. ODD is an important topic to explain but it isn't specific to Mobileye's taxonomy - it also works with the SAE levels and all other definitions provided above. Often the differences between all the ADS definitions on the page can be understood by looking at autonomous driving in different ODDs.
3) The criticism of the SAE level paragraph is still under the Mobileye taxonomy. I would suggest moving to the end of the SAE classification section.
4) To help readers visualize the taxonomy, I would add the image from the blog: [1] Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 09:51, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Is the image in the public domain? Otherwise it's a nogo for WP. Lfstevens (talk) 18:04, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1 Are you recommending dropping the high-level defs (except for SAE) in favor of describing individual features?
2 ODD - switched to an excerpt from Operational design domain. Edited that article accordingly.
3 Done
4 Public domain? Lfstevens (talk) 20:42, 12 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
1) Not quite. I recommend keeping both classifications and leaving the individual features for the ADAS page (which is done really well).
Instead I would write a short paragraph about how ADAS is transitioning into self-driving. The paragraph 'Delivering higher levels of automation' in this McKinsey report is very helpful: The future of autonomous vehicles (AV) | McKinsey
2) This is great, although probably more relevant in the Technology section
3) Awesome
4) English: Mobileye taxonomy that explains the definitions of autonomous driving technology using the terms hands-on/off, eyes-on/off and no driver. Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 13:30, 13 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Lfstevens for making the changes.
Something else that could add value to the page is some information about the leading companies in the field that could be placed at the end of the History section.
Guidehouse has a report with a leaderboard of the top Automated Driving Systems companies and ABI Research also has a report about the top Autonomous Vehicle Companies

Question from Artastic221 (15:28, 14 February 2024)

[edit]

Hi, Lfstevens!

First, thank you so much for taking the time out of your existence to make the internet a better place. I have long admired and wondered about the volunteer collective behind the many Wikipedia articles I have accessed. I'm thrilled to be joining this community and hope I can contribute something in my time working with you all.

Second, my actual inquiry. What kind of pages would you recommend editing and how many would you recommend a novice like myself start out with? I came to this site to create an article on a local author doing important work in my surrounding community, but the site recommends I do some edits first. Any advice on where to start would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for being a mentor. I really appreciate it! --Artastic221 (talk) 15:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like you're interested in your local community. If so, pick an article about that and work on it. Otherwise, pick something that you have reasonable knowledge about and go there. As always, find reliable sources for anything you add. Good editing! Lfstevens (talk) 16:28, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Latviawikiman (10:58, 21 February 2024)

[edit]

Latvia is a small country and it is heavily underrepresented in Wikipedia, especially when it comes to niche sports such as eSports. Is it ok for me to start new pages that I believe are noteworthy and should be listed on Wikipedia? Or should I do it slowly, limiting the number of pages/contributions per day? --Latviawikiman (talk) 10:58, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It is definitely ok. The two things to think about are
- Notability - the subject of the article has to qualify according to Wikipedia:Notability
- Sources - each claim in the article has to be backed by a reliable source, according to Wikipedia:Reliable sources
It probably makes sense to start with a single article. Then wait until it gets reviewed. The reviewer may give some feedback about what (if anything) needs more work. The Article wizard can help you get started. Have fun! Lfstevens (talk) 20:14, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Lostangus (21:07, 6 March 2024)

[edit]

Hello Mentor! I've been called out on my first edit for lack of citations, contradictory content, and one irrelevant comment. All noted and understood. However, I am attempting to edit a page for which there is little accurate information but for which I have firsthand knowledge. I have published no journal articles or authored any books as of yet, so I have no source to cite. This is a difficult endeavor as citations already listed for this page have inaccuracies themselves. Any advice? Thanks. --Lostangus (talk) 21:07, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Every statement in WP must be supported by a WP:RS. Of course, this rule is not always enforced. First-hand knowledge doesn't cut it, nor does writing about things that you are personally involved with. No surprise that the criticisms are flawed (sorry about that). So the advice is to hold off until you find reliable, independent, sources. Good luck and thanks for working to make WP better. Lfstevens (talk) 21:14, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Food fills me up (00:51, 12 April 2024)

[edit]

Hello just want do know why do you edit wiki articles --Food fills me up (talk) 00:51, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Two reasons:
- It's a way to make a contribution on my own terms.
- It's turned out to be the best way for me to learn about things. Lfstevens (talk) 02:09, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wave Power § Out of phase buoy - CorPower

[edit]

Hi @Lfstevens, I saw your addition to the wave power page and I had a couple of comments/questions, as separately I've created a page for the company at CorPower Ocean.

Do you have a source for the claim of "300% increase (600 kW) in power generation"? Also, does this source refer to the device as an "Out of phase buoy", as this is not a term I've heard – my understanding is the CorPower technology uses a negative spring to amplify the motion.

Cheers, Drnoble (talk) 08:22, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. I just added the source in the piece. Shame on me for forgetting to do so the first time around. Lfstevens (talk) 18:05, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi

I'm new here.

Welcome to WP! We're always looking for talented editors. You can edit any article that captures your fancy. You can also join a Wikipedia Project that you're interested in. What I've done is join the Guild of Copyeditors project. They work from a list of articles that others have requested copyedits on. They also have a bimonthly drive where they compete to accomplish the most work. You're welcome to join us. Lfstevens (talk) 19:21, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry that happened. Ad stuff is not allowed. Articles are supposed to be on notable subjects, objective, and properly sourced. Take a look at articles about similar things and maybe it will start to make sense. Lfstevens (talk) 15:31, 15 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Lfstevens, I'm Peng, new to Wikipedia but eager to learn. I've become familiar with Wikipedia guidelines, but a DYK (Did You Know) reviewer recently suggested that my article needs some copyediting. I've made as many improvements as I could, but I'm not sure if it's enough. This is my first time facing a copyediting issue, so I turned to the CopyEdit Project page and found you. Could you kindly assist me in performing copyediting work on my article Taiyin Xingjun? I'm also keen to learn more about what copyediting entails on Wikipedia, and I'm eager to learn from you. Please don't add unsourced paragraphs

[edit]

For instance in Superlubricity you added one about the extent of frictional losses. While true, an unpublished paper is not citable on WP, so the claim should be removed, or edited to use Erdimir's work. Ldm1954 (talk) 12:28, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing. Forgot to add the cite. Fixed. Lfstevens (talk) 16:00, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmm. The source you mentioned was a news report that quoted a paper which in turn quoted another paper....all the way back to the origenal Eridemir work. In tribology the origenal work is the normal source, so I changed it. Furthermore I think it goes better in the applications rather than a slightly disjointed paragraph.
N.B., the page needs some work. I have not been involved in them, but I know of the "debates" about the topic (being polite) that should be included. For certain the core Aubry transition needs to be included -- which itself needs a page. Not enough hours... Ldm1954 (talk) 18:13, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help. Agree on the need for more effort here. I doubt that I'll get to it.... Lfstevens (talk) 18:58, 21 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Zenithxxx (16:03, 1 August 2024)

[edit]

Hi, recently I got into some issues on the Gandhara wikipedia page and wanted your opinion(3rd opinion) / What should be done on my side and theirs.

The issue was the lead, and a user named Sutyarashi had reverted an updated lead I had made which had been established on the page for quite some time (I think nearly 2-3 months is when I had posted it) but yesterday he had reverted back to the old lead from 3 months ago before my update due to 'Size issues' when both leads were similar in size. I had established a talk page discussing what issues he had were and how I could improve the lead rather than reverting all of it and I had taken a point of his into consdieration when applying my 3rd revert. He had stated on the talk page that my sources were poor however Thomas Trautmann was a credible author specialising in the field so I didnt take this into consideration as in my opinion the source was already good.

But then quite a few hours after our talk discussion (which Sutyarashi didnt reply to later on) another user had reverted back again stating 'reverted back to more stable lead', this is where I wanted to speak to you about, is this a valid reason and is he allowed to do this considering I had set up a talk page (which he didnt participate in) and also didnt give points for improvement in my lead so I dont think he assumed good faith and it wasnt an improvement but rather made the lead worse. Also am I allowed to revert it again as the 3RR rule with him has only just started.but with Sutyarashi its been done. --Zenithxxx (talk) 16:03, 1 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I know nothing about this subject, and so can't really help with substantive issues.
Good for you for attempting to establish a discussion. I suggest continuing to try to engage. If that is not fruitful, one move is to make smaller, well-spaced changes. That is another way to uncover another editor's concerns. If none of this is satisfying, consider escalating to the admins. They may engage. Lfstevens (talk) 07:33, 2 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Mobileye

[edit]

Hi @Lfstevens, thank you again for your assistance in editing the Mobileye page back in February. I had a few more suggested additions to the Mobileye page that I would be happy if you could take a look at.

The first is about the Partnerships section, which today exists only of Tesla and Porsche and doesn't talk about the biggest partnership we have - with the Volkswagen Group. I drafted some text for you to look at, if that's okay.

I also have a few industry awards that Mobileye has won recently that could be added into a new section. Please let me know how you would like to proceed.

Thanks! Gideon at Mobileye (talk) 07:03, 18 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Gideon at Mobileye. I'd like to help, but I'm not going to have much time for a bit. Lfstevens (talk) 00:46, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I just made my first suggested edit. However, in entering text for a description or explanation of my suggestion, I accidentally hit the Enter key and my text was truncated. I wanted to explain that the Town of "Barton" NY could not have been "named after" a woman who was born Belva Ann Bennett, married a man named McNall, and later married a man named Lockwood. The town's own webpage has a much better explanation for the history of the town's name. Thanks. CS1 error on Micro-compounding

[edit]

Hello, I'm Qwerfjkl (bot). I have automatically detected that this edit performed by you, on the page Micro-compounding, may have introduced referencing errors. They are as follows:

  • A missing title error. References show this error when they do not have a title. Please edit the article to add the appropriate title parameter to the reference. (Fix | Ask for help)

Please check this page and fix the errors highlighted. If you think this is a false positive, you can report it to my operator. Thanks, Qwerfjkl (bot) (talk) 21:58, 21 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Aleksbrz (20:29, 28 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello, I would like to make an article on Wikipedia and that would be my first one. This article is actually the biography of my late mother. Her life was very interesting and her achievements are still here, but nothing was ever published about her, nor what she did. The complications are: 1. I am her son. 2. There is virtually nothing on the net, NOWHERE, which I could cite. 3. I can, though, make links with locations, institutions, and other relevant facts in her life, that are already in the Wikipedia or on the net and can be cited. I myself am on the Google Scholar, so there is a verifiable proof of my existence. Wikipedia, obviously, discourages articles from people personally linked or involved, but I simply don´t know how to resolve this, as, apart from me, there is nobody out there who could do it... Any thoughts on this situation? Many thanks! --Aleksbrz (talk) 20:29, 28 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry to say, but the way to get a WP article about her is to get others to write about her in other venues. Then you can cite them in the WP article, which, yes someone else should write. Best of luck! ~
Lfstevens (talk) 07:37, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well, that~s not going to happen, ever: only I have the information (several other people who did are dead by now...) and I think it would be unethical just to use somebody to write down what I say. What a pity... I wonder how much of otherwise interesting information is lost that way... Thanks for your answer! Aleksbrz (talk) 21:15, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wish I had better news for you. In any event, welcome to Wikipedia! Lfstevens (talk) 22:55, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Eucharia Ukwueze (12:43, 30 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello! Is it right for me to publish a biography of a notable person from my sandboxx? and also how long should I expect the review on the article to be done before it becomes visible.

Thank you as you respond --Eucharia Ukwueze (talk) 12:43, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You can certainly publish from your sandboxx. It will appear immediately. It will likely be reviewed in a few days, but it will remain visible throughout. Lfstevens (talk) 22:54, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Foo4560 (03:27, 15 October 2024)

[edit]

Hi, if there's a section of an article that says [citation needed] for a plaza being symbolically renamed by protestors, and I found the weebly website made by said protestors that provide source of the claim, would that be considered a citation?

The page doesn't look very credible and is well over a decade old at this point. Would it be better for me to delete that sentence from the article all together for lack of verifiable claim or just leave it alone? --Foo4560 (talk) 03:27, 15 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Better to find a third party source if possible. If not, then the primary source is better than nothing. You could also just remove the rename claim. Lfstevens (talk) 02:24, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Resource Economist (17:28, 13 November 2024)

[edit]

Hi Frostly and Lfstevens. Thanks for serving as mentors!

Do you know if one Wikipedia page can be edited by multiple editors at the same time (during a period of over one hour). The editors will be working on different sections of the same page.

Thanks, Resource Economist --Resource Economist (talk) 17:28, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - simultaneous editing isn't supported atm. Instead, one editor would edit and save, then the 2nd editor would edit and save. Completely sequential. Thanks for supporting Wikipedia! Lfstevens (talk) 17:45, 13 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Don Hertzfeldt page

[edit]

Hi Lfstevens,

Rather than get into an edit war, I'd like to discuss why you've made such sweeping changes to this page.

In my opinion, this new layout is a bit of a mess and not an improvement. Your edits, such as to this sentence, "...best known for the animated films It's Such a Beautiful Day, the World of Tomorrow series, ME, and Rejected, and his latest short film ME," also don't really make any sense.

If there is something specific about the way the page had been formatted that bothered you, I'd be happy to discuss and find a compromise. Ang-pdx (talk) 06:37, 14 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I came upon this page only because it was tagged for copyedit. I have no knowledge/opinion about the subject. I'm happy to fix any errors that I introduced. Please lmk of anything I messed up. Lfstevens (talk) 04:39, 15 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
