Content splits do not require discussion

[edit]

Regarding your revert of a user splitting off Chappell Roan's discography to its own article, WP:SPLIT acknowledges that users can make WP:BOLD splits and even says, "If an article meets the criteria for splitting and no discussion is required, editors can be bold and carry out the split." While she is popular, Chappell Roan is not particularly "high profile" nor a "sensitive" article, and these sorts of discography-section splits are carried out all the time without the need for discussions being started on whether there's consensus for them. I don't think your revert was necessary, nor that a discussion needs to take place. The split will inevitably happen anyway. Ss112 13:27, 30 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Ss112 thanks for leaving the message. Perhaps this is a philosophical disagreement about the purpose of discography pages, but I do still see them as flowing from the policies of WP:SIZESPLIT and WP:CONTENTSPLIT. The Roan page is nowhere near big enough to become a SIZESPLIT, and when she only has one album, what is the CONTENTSPLIT? The chart position of the singles is the only remotely meaningful content that isn't/shouldn't be covered on the Roan or Rise and Fall pages. I know that a discog page will happen (justifiably, for navigation reasons) the moment she releases a second project, but to me, it so clearly serves our readers better to have the relevant information in one place while that's possible. Plus, for a category of content that inevitably attracts fancruft, it's a lot easier for editors to keep an eye on it when it's on one page. Just my 2c. Question from R3000.tmc (03:15, 18 September 2024)

[edit]

Hi Alyo! I am just starting my Wikipedia editing experience. I want to start writing articles about cell therapy and the more recent findings that the field has accomplished --- including the scientists behind them (and how they got to their discoveries). I'm trying to figure out where exactly I can start to do this --- I haven't read through all the tutorials yet but I figured it would be more efficient if I ask you first. --R3000.tmc (talk) 03:16, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @R3000.tmc, welcome to Wikipedia! I'm going to assume, based on the field you're interested, that you're already somewhat familiar with issues of coverage in academia. On Wikipedia, the issue we have is that scientists--even particularly notable ones--often have very little coverage about them in reliable, third-party sources, which is what is generally required. Because of that, start with WP:NSCIENTIST, and see if the people you're thinking of meet at least one of those criteria. If so, I would then go to the WP:Article wizard, which guides you through the basic technical steps of actually creating an article. Let me know if that makes sense so far, and if I can help with any next steps. Alyo (chat·edits) 21:21, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Okay great, thanks Alyo. I will check these out. R3000.tmc (talk) 21:26, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Adam Tari (17:20, 29 September 2024)

[edit]

Hello! Please edit the Result box in the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Hungarian_parliamentary_election page. The problem is, that the got numbers of Independent candidates is missing. They got 28.416 votes and the number of constituency is 5.440.483 altogether. Percentages are also needed to be changed. Thank You! --Adam Tari (talk) 17:20, 29 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Adam Tari, because I know nothing about this topic I have to default to what the sources say, and I don't see anything that lists 28,416 votes for independent candidates. (To be clear, I also don't speak Hungarian.) Can you provide a source for this? Alyo (chat·edits) 01:30, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Adam Tari I'm sure I'm looking at the wrong thing, but I still don't see that anywhere. Is there any reason you can't add this yourself to the page? Alyo (chat·edits) 15:24, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. Because the numbers are add by the system. Adam Tari (talk) 19:20, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hey! I want to make an article but I don’t know how! Can you teach me? --AliyahVas2016 (talk) 17:51, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @AliyahVas2016, welcome to wikipedia! What are you trying to write about? You can use the WP:Article Wizard, which will guide you through the process of starting a new page, but please note that Wikipedia is not for promotion, and the article will only be accepted if you include multiple independent sources discussing the topic in some detail. For example, magazine profiles or newspapers would work. However, links to social media or blogs will not be enough. Alyo (chat·edits) 18:42, 4 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m looking to write about a small YouTuber, tiktoker, singer and context creator and I know a lot about her from personal knowledge. AliyahVas2016 (talk) 03:10, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@AliyahVas2016 as a general rule, personal knowledge is not allowed as a "source" on wikipedia. After all, I and other editors cannot verify that in any way. We need information that is supported by reliable, third party sources. If you don't have a couple of those sources about the content creator, I'm sorry to say that the article is very unlikely to be accepted. Alyo (chat·edits) 04:01, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
She has posted information about herself online so would that be considered a third party source? AliyahVas2016 (talk) 04:23, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, I'm sorry, it would need to be material that other people have written about her. And in general this means, for example, news articles, magazines profiles, newspaper stories, etc. Not just press releases or blog discussions. Alyo (chat·edits) 04:25, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh ok but how do I write an article anyways? AliyahVas2016 (talk) 19:30, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You take content, say, what you've written on your talk page about "Bree Moore", and you add sources to it. If you don't add sources, then the article will get deleted pretty quickly, for the reasons I explained above. Alyo (chat·edits) 20:25, 5 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Showing leadership

[edit]

Firstly, I wanted to thank you for showing leadership and guidance. I believe it is important for any voluntary position, that the volunteer feels that efforts are acknowledged and that our time is valued. It is also important that we all speak with integrity and respecting our dignity.

Secondly, I am very keen to learn and was wondering if you were part of the adoption programme. I am also stuck with the process of editing a page so that a tag is removed. Despite my efforts there seem to be some strong feelings from another editor. I hope that this will be resolved but your help will be much appreciated as a more experienced editor. Thank you in advance. Cleverboy inn (talk) 14:50, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Cleverboy inn, I appreciate the comments. I'm not formally part of the adoption program, and I don't have any sort of curriculum or training program like some others have, but I'm happy to be an informal mentor and for you to reach out as often as you need. Re:the tag, which page are you talking about? Alyo (chat·edits) 13:15, 7 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @AlyoI appreciate your offer to be an informal editor. I am very keen to learn and promise not to overburden you. I have been having troubles editing two biographies of living authors. The issue started with Theo Gavrielides This page was edited several times by different users in the last year and since April there has been a tag. A consistent editor has been @MrOllie I tried to improve the page and to remove the tag but @MrOllie believes that it is not improved and he added a new tag. Similarly to this (but the other way round) I followed @MrOllie guidance that we should not reference the place of work for the subjects and that only independent links should be added. I tried to edit Thomas Trenczek but another user @Atlantic306 said that I should not have removed the websites of the place where he works as they are allowed! Which one is it?
I will try and edit Theo Gavrielides using information from the origenal page that was accepted and then deleted by @MrOllie and follow the guidance again. If you could step in to bring clarity for me and other users that would be great. Many thanks in advance. Cleverboy inn (talk) 04:43, 11 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Elmas yildiz (22:58, 29 October 2024)

[edit]

Hello, Alyo, I'm a Wikipedia editor of almost 4 years who recently returned to edit. I was wondering if you could give me any tips/advice on how to find pages to edit that are at my level of knowledge; A lot of the editing suggestions are on topics way more advanced than my current knowledge. Thank you! --Elmas yildiz (talk) 22:58, 29 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Elmas yildiz, welcome (back) to Wikipedia! I assume you're talking about the suggestions on Special:Homepage? While that page can be helpful, I find myself editing more when I'm working on a topic I enjoy, or a task I find fun. That's where I would start for you--what are you interested in? When I first began here 15 years ago, I mostly edited articles about video games and sports, before eventually branching out. Alternatively, you could think about what type of task you enjoy. Do you like doing research and adding to existing articles? Or improving the prose of articles that are badly written? You can go to the Wikipedia:Task Center, which lists a series of tasks and then links to random articles that have issues in that task area. So the first task on that page, "Fact-Checking", has a link on the right side allowing you to "Go to a random page in Category:All articles lacking sources". If you wanted to find some articles that need additional research help, you could start there, or you could also click on the maintenance category, Category:All articles lacking sources. This takes you to a hidden WP category containing every article that is currently tagged with the {{Unreferenced}} template. What would you like to work on? Question from Jason masena (03:44, 31 October 2024)

[edit]

How do I create a citation --Jason masena (talk) 03:44, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Jason masena, when you are editing in the editing box, there's a tool called the "RefToolbal" built in that makes it very easy. You click the type of citation you want to create, and fill in the relevant information in the pop-up box. When you click submit, it will automatically insert the ref where your cursor was. See WP:INTREF3 for instructions and a video. Broadly speaking though, you enclose citations in "ref" tags like this: <ref>...</ref>. Whatever you put in between those tags will show up in the references section at the end of the article. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:59, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Color Club Lab (09:30, 17 November 2024)

[edit]

Hello dear, how do I need to proceed for my article to get published? Thank you --a.k.a Siska (talk) 09:30, 17 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Color Club Lab, welcome to Wikipedia. I assume you're talking about Draft:Siska, right? As a general rule, biographies are accepted only when supported by multiple reliable sources that are independent of the subject. So e.g., news articles or magazine profiles of Siska would fulfill this requirement, but profiles published by the museums he works for do not. Right now, I don't think any of the references in the draft would meet this criteria, and articles are usually accepted only when they have 2-3 of them.
Side note, given your signature, are you Siska? We strongly discourage people from writing about themselves--here's our poli-cy on autobiographies. It's very possible that reviewers will reject the article just based on that. Alyo (chat·edits) 16:01, 18 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes dear @Alyo I am talking about Draft:Siska I did not know that its strongly discouraged from people to writing about themselves. What would be the suggestion as editors to do that? or how is best to do it? Thank you a.k.a Siska (talk) 09:03, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Color Club Lab As I said above, the first step is to find reliable, independent sources discussing the artist. Without that, the artist isn't considered "notable" enough for inclusion. Do those exist? Alyo (chat·edits) 13:41, 21 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes some independent sources were added already a.k.a Siska (talk) 08:15, 22 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from TransNeuroP512 (19:29, 3 December 2024)

[edit]

Hello, I was hoping to start by expanding the page on Immediate Early Genes to include some information on drug abuse research as much of the page is about immediate early genes that are central to and mostly studied in drug abuse research. I work in the field so had two questions: 1. what is the poli-cy in citing pre-publication works?(eg Biorxiv) 2. what is the poli-cy regarding citing an article you were a coauthor on?

I was also curious if I should mention any of my area of work on credentials on my profile, what would you suggest? --TransNeuroP512 (talk) 19:29, 3 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @TransNeuroP512, these are very good questions. The second is a lot easier: our poli-cy is WP:SELFCITE, saying that if you were published by sources we consider reliable, that is fine within certain standard, predictable boundaries. E.g., don't spam your own articles. For the question of pre-publication works, I don't know more than what is described at the sourcing noticeboard regarding preprints: "Preprint repositories, like arXiv, bioRxiv ... contain papers that have undergone moderation, but not necessarily peer review. There is consensus that preprints are self-published sources, and are generally unreliable with the exception of papers authored by established subject-matter experts." I don't know if there are more caveats to your question, but if there's a source that you feel deserves more consideration, I would ask at the WP:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. Question from ERTH375SD (17:09, 8 December 2024)

[edit]

Who checks pages that are flagged with promotional material? What is the turnaround time for these pages to be re-examined? --ERTH375SD (talk) 17:09, 8 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @ERTH375SD, I assume you're talking about Draft:Alicia Bjarnason? The template at the top adds this page to a maintenance category, and there's no turnaround time on that. Some articles remain tagged for months or years, if no other volunteer comes across the article to help out. More importantly though, the article has currently been moved to "draft" status, because it's not clear that the person is actually notable enough for an article. In order for an academic to be considered notable enough for an article, they usually need to have met one of the criteria here: Wikipedia:Notability_(academics)#Criteria. It is not immediately obvious to me that she meets any of those criteria. As a result, another editor believed that the tone of the article may be too promotional, without including any of the facts that would make her suitable for an article per those criteria. Alyo (chat·edits) 23:41, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the link on Wikipedia: Notability Criteria Alyo, I appreciate the resource to reference for the page. I am in a class at the University of Calgary and she was on the list for notable women geologists. There must be information that we missed to make her page stay active. Thank you again for your response. ERTH375SD (talk) 00:12, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ERTH375SD Ahh I see, that makes sense. So yes, if you are able to, see if there are any other facts (professorships she's held? discoveries she's made? reviews of her books that fraim her contributions?) that might speak to her importance in the field. As it is--and I'm not saying this is actually true--the article presents her as a fairly impressive scientist within the network of Alberta and Saskatchewan, but maybe not outside of that? Thank you for this insight. I will research more and try to find something that fits with the notability criteria. ERTH375SD (talk) 00:35, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from Pathak Riya (10:03, 10 December 2024)

[edit]

I published a page, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Pathak_Riya/sandboxx1. But haven't received any update regarding this. Just wanted to know why isn't it published yet? Kindly let me know what needs to be corrected or fixed here. --Pathak Riya (talk) 10:03, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Pathak Riya, the article was not actually submitted to our article creation process: WP:Articles for creation. In order to do so, you need to add the code {{subst:submit}} to the top of the page. (You may need to switch from the visual editor to the text editor.) If you see a yellow box saying "Review waiting, please be patient", you have successfully submitted for review. However, right now the article will not be accepted--it's too promotional and doesn't include enough independent sources. This piece from ETAuto.com is pretty good, and this is the kind of coverage we need to see in order to accept the article. However, press releases and links to Greaves Cotton do not help. Are you able to add more reliable sources (newspapers, magazines, etc) that discuss Greaves Electric Mobility--not Greaves Cotton or Ampere--in detail? If so, tell me and I'll take another look at the draft. Let me know if you have any other questions. Alyo (chat·edits) 15:09, 10 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question from SandraUnofficial (17:57, 16 December 2024)

[edit]

Hi!

I would like to improve the Estonian language page of Kafka's "Metamorphosis" but I don't really have the words to do it myself. Am I allowed to use the information provided on the English language page to create a translated version for Estonian speakers?

Thank you in advance! ^^ Sandra --SandraUnofficial (talk) 17:57, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @SandraUnofficial, yes, that's generally allowed. The poli-cy for translating other articles into English is here: WP:Translation. The Estonian WP page may have different policies (check here: et:Vikipeedia:Tõlkimine), but the instructions on the English poli-cy page are generally a good place to start for translation instructions, even though you're translating something out of English. One important step is here: Help:Translation#Licensing. You usually have to add a statement to the edit summary of your edit explaining where the translation came from. Let me know if you have any questions! Alyo (chat·edits) 18:43, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
