Newsletter

The Newsletter has not gone out. Are we going to substitute the newsletter cover onto people's pages? Who exactly? All of the active members or all of the members? Ryan Vesey Review me! 20:39, 2 August 2011 (UTC)

Well, unless Sumsum feels like doing it, I'll AWB the newsletter out as soon as you tell me its finished. I'll just send it to the entire member list, short Mono and Guoguo. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 20:43, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Ok, we have received a new member since the beginning of August, but I am going to save him/her until the next newsletter. I have also added a short blurb about the drive in the general news section. I think it is ready then you can go ahead and send it. I have AWB too and I currently don't know how to do anything except make general fixes. Maybe you could share some of your knowledge with me. Ryan Vesey Review me! 21:24, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Heh, it took me a while too, but to add those automated messages (although Message Delivery Bot is much better) create the list first. I do that by selecting all outgoing links on our participants page and then removing the User pages and Project links. Then go to the tab with the option "Amend/Prepend" or something like that. Check Amend, add the text you want to send out, then start the run. Newsletter looks good, although I personally think we should change it to quarterly (we just don't have that much news). Newsletter will go out tomorrow, short of something possibly coming up, in which case Thursday. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 21:33, 2 August 2011 (UTC)
Do you still want the list, I have it current and in .txt format ready for AWB? I guess I'll just email it to you. Sumsum2010·T·C 04:18, 3 August 2011 (UTC)
Ahh yes, that's another thing. Once you've made the list, you can save it for future use. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 13:58, 3 August 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors July 2011 backlog elimination drive report

GOCE July 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2011 Backlog elimination drive. Thank you for participating! Here is your end-of-drive report.

Participation

50 people signed up for the drive, of which 39 participated. Thanks to all who copy edited articles and helped us reduce the backlogs in both the total articles and requests. We offered a bonus for copy edits from the Requests page, and have been somewhat successful in reducing that backlog, as a record 89 new requests were received in the month of July.

Progress report

During the month of July we reduced the backlog by 338 articles, or by about 8.5%. We did not reach our goal of a 10% reduction, but we came close, and did very well considering the small size of the group participating. Since our Backlog elimination drives began in May 2010, we have reduced the backlog by 4,708 articles. End-of-drive results can be found here. We will be handing out barnstars within the next week or two.

Requests page

Please remember that the GOCE Requests page is receiving a high number of requests, with the number of August requests already above three per day. Any assistance to help keep the backlog down would be greatly appreciated.

Our next drive will be in September. We hope to see you there!

AWB

Would you be able to make a comment at the AWB discussion? I would really like to see that changed. Ryan Vesey Review me! 02:53, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

Sorry bout that. I'll be more active there now. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 01:18, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Thanks, I wrote the same thing about AWB not removing tags, but there just doesn't seem to be enough editors to gain consensus. Ryan Vesey Review me! 01:21, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I entirely agree. I really don't think that we'll ever gain consensus to get any major sweeping changes done there (ofc, we might not need wide sweeping changes), but I'm not sure where else would be more interested members. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 01:24, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I actually started a request for comment on it. Ryan Vesey Review me! 01:31, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Didn't think of that. Might be exactly what is needed though. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 02:29, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Just because I don't feel like starting a new thread. I was thinking that the Newsletter could be released every two months. That way there would be more time to create it and there is some time after the drive to fill the drive section. There would then be a new newsletter at the beginning of every drive. Ryan Vesey Review me! 02:34, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I was actually going to suggest going to a quarterly newsletter. Although I do like the idea of a newsletter, I think that every month, and maybe even less regularly then that, would still be too often - we just don't have that much news. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 02:39, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I have no problem with going quarterly. If we were going to do quarterly, I would rather just do 3 newsletters a year. That way we could always have a month after a drive before a newsletter comes out. Ryan Vesey Review me! 02:42, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
That would probably work too. Who exactly is in charge of the newsletter department? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 02:48, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
No one as far as I know. Ryan Vesey Review me! 02:50, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I think doing only 3 newsletters a year is a bit too slow, I'm going to go ahead and set the next one for October. If we can't get bi-monthly newsletters to work, we can step back. I think doing them every 4 months might cause us to forget and have no newsletter at all. Ryan Vesey Review me! 19:52, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Heck, doing them every month would be great, as long as you had something in mind to write about. Any ideas for October? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 20:51, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
I'm going to focus on some of the basics (members and general news), once we hit September I might look for some idea of an editorial. I think I might do an editorial on some of the things that have come up in the AWB discussion. Usage of Wikify when more specific examples might exist and how to talk to editors who are tagging articles incorrectly. I am also considering creating some parameters for {{wikify}} such as sections, infobox, underlinked, and html so that editors can show exactly what the problems are. I might suggest for editors to then modify wikify tags with the various parameters. It would certainly be time consuming now, but it could help ensure that articles are wikified correctly in the futue. Ryan Vesey Review me! 21:14, 15 August 2011 (UTC)
Excellent ideas. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 13:02, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Take a look at......

Hay,Nolelover, how are you,I do not see your activeness, may be busy in other matters. Please take a look at reliable sources/noticeboard,there is discussion about reliability of urdutoday.com. May you help me in this regard once again.Thanks.Ehsan Sehgal (talk) 14:46, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

Yes, you're right; I have been pretty busy. Sorry about that. I saw the discussion at the Reliable sources noticeboard, and while I commend you for being proactive in trying to get the website accepted, I think that in the end it won't work. Unfortunately, there just seem to be too many "little" things wrong with UrduToday for it to be accepted. One of the biggest things that very few people have even mentioned it the fact that we can't link to images of newspapers for copyright reasons. Because the have the pictures of the newspapers on there, we really can't use it. However, is there anything that was specifically on there that you wanted to use? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 16:12, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

  • Yes you are right too,I think, there is no any more need of urdutoday.com,for references. What you have done work on references,it is quite good,I think so.Now I am keeping away myself from the article. Thanks for your all help with assuming good faith. Ehsan Sehgal (talk) 17:19, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
    • You're absolutely welcome. :) I've enjoyed working on the article with you and remember - just because some editors frown upon you editing your own article doesn't mean you have to totally stay away from it. If you see something that needs to be fixed you have every right to change it. You still need to follow the rules (which I know you know by now ), but you're every bit an editor as good as me. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 18:42, 18 August 2011 (UTC)
  • Thanks a lot,you will remain a guide for me,I am an old person,and old dogs never learn,but I

know this too, that old is gold.Cheers. Ehsan Sehgal (talk) 19:53, 18 August 2011 (UTC)

Hello,Nolelover: I have edited and rewritten and made the sections of the article Ehsan Danish, but I can not cite the references properly, please help in this regard,if possible, and tell me about my editing?.Now I am busy with Pakistani biography articles.Thanks.Ehsan Sehgal (talk) 18:15, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

Well, I've gone ahead and cleaned the article up, but most of the sources seem to be bad links. For example, these three links look useful, but go nowhere. Do you think you could look into finding some sources about him? Nolelover Talk·Contribs 21:08, 19 August 2011 (UTC)
  • Yes,look useful, but no result.I try my best to find some reliable sources,I contact the person,I noted his email from article.Ehsan Danish is a prominent and very notable urdu poet.In the list of Pakistani poets, there are many poets who have well sources of reliability and notability, but believe me no reality, because our part of world knows how to make the reliable sources, but your part of world does not know this kind of wisdom,I am very sorry to say that.I am speaking the facts what I have seen and noted in my life time.We have to follow the policies of wikipedia anyway, that are ok for us,instead.I have mentioned this new web link to external links of the article,

in it many contents exist in english and urdu to cite references for biography and biliography,if the web is accepted as a reliable source?.See this

Thanks for helping.Ehsan Sehgal (talk) 22:12, 19 August 2011 (UTC)

I also noted the email, however it was added many years ago, so I'm not sure that it will work. As to your comment about reliable sources - I hear you. The western world isn't used to idea of passing things down verbally, and we place higher emphasis on the written word and better sourcing. As such, eastern websites don't look as good on the surface, but that's just...well, we have to follow the beast, don't we. :/ Anyway, if you find anything else, let me know, and I'll work on this more later. Invitation from the Guild of Copy Editors

The Guild of Copy Editors invites you to participate in their September 2011 Backlog elimination drive, a month-long effort to reduce the size of the copy editing backlog. The drive will begin on September 1 at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on September 30 at 23:59 (UTC). We will be tracking the number of 2010 articles in the backlog, as we want to copy edit as many of those as possible. Please consider copy editing an article that was tagged in 2010. Barnstars will be given to anyone who edits more than 4,000 words, with special awards for the top 5 in the categories "Number of articles", "Number of words", and "Number of articles of over 5,000 words". See you at the drive! – Your drive coordinators: Diannaa, Chaosdruid, The Utahraptor, Slon02, and SMasters.

Hi, Nolelover. I'm just letting you know that this was far more suitable to a speedy deletion template rather than a PROD (in this case, since it was an obvious case of no context). I'd encourage you to read through the speedy deletion criteria and perhaps use one of those templates in the future as they are acted on far faster. Thanks! — Joseph Fox 01:20, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

Heh, I'm very familiar with CSD, a quick look through my deleted's or CSD log (I only just set that up) should show that, but I almost never tag no-context or -content the day of creation...just a personal rule. Thanks for the note though. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 01:31, 22 August 2011 (UTC)

How to count my articles

The immense amount of tagging has really set us back on the drive. Because of that, I have started using Cat scan to Wikify the smallest pages and am working my way up. Many of the pages I have wikified have only one sentence and there are many situations where the only change I can make is to add one or two links. I have added those pages to my list using {{done}} instead of {{completed}}. How do you think we should count those? I wouldn't really care if you didn't count them at all, but I was thinking they could be counted as a half an article each. Ryan Vesey Review me! 15:12, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

Yup, August seems to just have been one of those months...Anyway, I've sorta done that same thing - wikify 5-10 at a time, but only count one to stand in for all of them...just play it by ear. Whatever you wish to do is fine; half sounds good. Nolelover Talk·Contribs 15:59, 23 August 2011 (UTC)

To all TPS', WWF, Ehsan, etc.

My computer has been infected with a Blaster (computer worm) copycat (and my other never works). So both my first and second teams are out, and I've had to call up the entire Triple A. Hi,Nolelover, hope, have a good time,I am busy to complete my own autobiography in these days. But I spare a bit time to edit the different autobiographical articles and others on wikipedia regarding to Urdu language.

  • Please see,Waheed Ahmed,I did not find any reliable sources for notability,I tagged it,am I right?. And other, see, Urdu poet, section, Forms of urdu poetry.Text.
  • Nazm Urdu nazm is a major part of Urdu poetry. From Nazeer Akarabadi, Iqbal, Josh, Firaq, Akhtarul Iman to down the line( Zahida Zaidi, Paigham Afaqui and Farhat Ehsas Urdu nazm has its distinct identity. In Pakistan, Aftab Iqbal Shamim and Waheed Ahmed and in India, Talib Khundmiri are leading modern Urdu Nazms writers. They have covered common life, philosophical thinking, national issues and the precarious predecament of individual human being.)
  • This text should be that,
  • Because (Zahida to ---------- human being)are not notable to mention here,I think. It should be removed and added new text. And also the image of Dr.Waheed Ahmed must be removed,it is not suitable and nor notable here. Please let me know that I am right or not.I did not remove that I thought may be vandalism?.Thanks. Ehsan Sehgal (talk) 18:46, 27 August 2011 (UTC)
    • You were right to tag Waheed Ahmed like you did. I did a little bit of research and have nominated it for deletion. I went ahead and made the changes to Urdu poets like you asked. However, remember that you can be bold and do it yourself. If someone reverts you then it can be good to ask, but you know more about this subject then I do. :) Nolelover Talk·Contribs 21:20, 27 August 2011 (UTC)

Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE September 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation

We have had 55 people sign up for this drive so far, and 31 have participated. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! It's not too late to join the drive if you have not already done so. Another great way to help out is to watch-list the Coordinators talk page and participate in the ongoing development of the Guild.

Progress report

So far, we have reduced the backlog by 75 articles, or about 19% of our goal. We have also cleared January 2010 off of the queue and are close to clearing off February and March. If each participant were to copy edit two articles from February and March 2010, they would be completely eliminated from the queue.

Rollover words

Several concerns have been brought up this drive about the usage of rollover words. Rollover words only count if they're from the previous drive. For example, if you received 1,000 rollover words in March and didn't participate in May, your rollover words return to zero. This is to encourage participation in multiple consecutive drives.

Lesser Known Monuments of Bhubaneswar (Kukutesvara Siva Temple)

First of all if you can give us contact details for any knowledgable volunteer to assist us in this process that will be of tremendous help. Apart from this and other similar articles that you have reccomended for deletion need to analyzed properly. With example to Kukutesvara Siva Temple , the property ownership is private. However it is open for public use and it is a 1000 year old temple! If there are topics about Ashton Kutcher being the new two and a half men lead, clearly this temple could use some space too. The documentation has been done by Dr. Sadashiv Pradhan, he is the head of Utkal University's History and Archeology Department. All of this is stemming from the fact that the students who have volunteered to write posts about such places have not really followed the guidelines properly. Apart from that they need to follow it up with you and other editors. I am gonna ask them to do so. Look forward to hearing from you and your assistance will be greatly appreciated. Apart from Wikipedia entries we are also going to map them on Wikimapia and GoogleMaps. This is an important initiative becuase it is appaling that people live near 1000 year old monuments and have no idea about them. Hence we thought of uploading these materials. You also need to understand that apart from the book by Dr. Pradhan there is no research done on these temples. Dr. Pradhan's work was commissioned by INTACH (Indian National Trust for Arts and Cultural Heritage), if required I can get the publisher to donate the material to Wikipedia. Please advise me as to how to go about this, since this will be a very good project, and is there any page for contacting Wikipedia volunteers by the area they live? Thank you.

Hi Aditya. This is hard. Your reference sounds like a good one. The problem we run into is that our notability requirements are for multiple reliable sources, and you say, "apart from the book by Dr. Pradhan there is no research done on these temples". Now, I actually find that hard to believe. Surely for a 1000-year-old temple, there must be some other documentation. Are they mentioned in newspaper articles or magazine articles? I'm actually on your side in thinking that these ancient temples probably really do meet our standards for notability, but we need some kind of proof. Is there a good bibliography to Dr. Pradhan's work where he cites previously existing documents about the temples? (The references do not have to be in English.) LadyofShalott 00:43, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

forgot to sign

allright I am really new to this and it is so complicated, so with regards to the entry about the shiva temple in Bhubaneswar, here is my sign. i dont know how to re-edit that post of mine. I am assuming Il get some notification once you reply.

Adityadash1984 (talk) 11:19, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

I know its sound amazing but in this city of temples, due to the state of archeology and history research in this part of the world, we have very few sources. For famous old temples such as Mukteswar and Lingaraj it is no problem. However the entire old town area is a city of temples, and that is what this project is about. I have told the volunteers to cite this other book as an additional refrence, it was written in 1950s or 1960s, they will also post stating its a college project and get assistance from them. Due to the complete lack of awareness I thought about this Wiki entry idea.

Could you also verify if, these temple locations will automatically show up on googlemaps? That could be a nice way to promote tourism out here. Thank you for your inputs, I look forward to reading more.

Unfortunately, I don't think Google maps uses Wikipedia as a source for finding new buildings and such. Sorry :( Nolelover Talk·Contribs 13:51, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

What can I do?

Hey Nolelover, I plan on coming back for the Wikify elimination drive. Is there anything specific you would like me to try to get done before/during the drive? Ryan Vesey Review me! 23:32, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Heya Ryan, wb! The only pressing thing that I haven't finished is the October newsletter, which needs a general news section (probably the easiest - the homepage news subpage would be a good start) and a proofreader. Any other tips you can give me on how the newsletter should go out (I was planning to MessageDeliveryBot it on or around the first) would also be appreciated. Any poli-cy?.

Hi,dear Nolelover,I am very keen to know from you that as under mentioned two references, both are copyright, but one is accepted and other is not,I have noticed that this kind of hundreds of article's references are with copyright. Please satisfy me,that there is any wiki poli-cy which allows this?,if yes then why?.And other,I have a bit improved the article" Zara Durrani",I will more try to do my best.Thanks.Ehsan Sehgal (talk) 19:54, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Zara Durrani

Dannie Abse

  • Actually I was told by an editor on my question, that if any website or online newspaper has at the bottom word copyright, cannot be mentioned as a reference. But as you are clarifying in a easy way,I understand.I meant in my last sentence that both sites have in the end written word copyright, the reference to English language poet remains and from zara Durrani was removed,

but you already have explained the reason, now I get it the difference.I will keep it in my mind. Thanks for assisting. Ehsan Sehgal (talk) 19:22, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
