Etymology
[edit]Dialect. Originally predominantly written as 老燈/老灯 (lǎodēng), changes occurred around Joe Biden took office as the 46th president of United States, for his family name is transliterated as 拜登 (Bàidēng). Some suggest the eponym of this word is 登徒子 (dēngtúzǐ) (a fictional character in the classic story Master Tēng-t'u 《登徒子好色賦》, see Arthur Waley's translation for details), thereafter becoming an allusion and vernacular in some Mandarin dialects. (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
