Noun

[edit]

Lords

  1. plural of Lord

Proper noun

[edit]

Lords

  1. (British, UK politics, plural only) Ellipsis of House of Lords.
Coordinate terms: House, Commons, House of Commons, Houses of Parliament, Westminster, Palace of Westminster

Usage notes

[edit]

Although plural in form, the term takes singular verb forms: “The Lords has made its decision.” When used by itself, the word is accompanied by the definite article: “The LCC scheme for expanding and linking up tramways across Central London was rejected by the Lords.” But when used attributively, the definite article is omitted: “The sons of peers can be members of the House of Commons till they succeed to their seat in Lords.”
