Origin uncertain, but probably from Proto-West Germanic *lappiʀu (flaps, lobes), an irregular plural derived from Proto-West Germanic *lappō, from Proto-Germanic *lappô + -ic (diminutive suffix). Equivalent to læppa +‎ -ic.
