[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *sh₂éy-ōl ~ *sh₂i-l-és, from *sh₂ey- (“to bind, fetter”). Cognate with Hittite [script needed] (iš-hi-ia-al, “band”), and possibly Proto-Balto-Slavic *séiˀlāˀ (“soul”).
