[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₃w-ō ~ *(s)ḱuh₃-nés ((one's) shadow, reflection), from *(s)ḱeh₃w- (shadow) +‎ *-ō. (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?) Alternatively, per Kroonen, from or influenced in meaning by Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewh₁- (to perceive, observe),[1] while Orel prefers a derivation from *(s)kewH- (to cover, hide).[2]
