From Proto-Indo-European *(s)ḱeh₃w-ō ~ *(s)ḱuh₃-nés (“(one's) shadow, reflection”), from *(s)ḱeh₃w- (“shadow”) +‎ *-ō. (Can this⁽⁺⁾ etymology be sourced?) Alternatively, per Kroonen, from or influenced in meaning by Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewh₁- (“to perceive, observe”), while Orel prefers a derivation from *(s)kewH- (“to cover, hide”).
