Master of Music in Music Education

Delivered via: Internet, Practicum, Onsite Instruction

The Master of Music Education does not lead to teaching certification; rather it is a degree program designed to enhance your teaching with a practical curriculum designed for the working teacher. Most students take 1–2 classes online during the school year while teaching and come to campus in person to take Modern Band, Dalcroze, or Orff Schulwerk training. Courses are also available online during the summer. Students may also specialize in the teaching of general music with a Graduate Certificate in Orff Schulwerk.

Those interested in more details should contact Dr. Martina Vasil.

PhD in Music Education

The PhD in Music Education is primarily a research degree. Students will take a deep dive into research methodologies and will develop expertise in an area of research in music education. The PhD program is carefully scaffolded to provide students opportunities to develop their writing, critical thinking, and research skills. They will gain experience in presenting their work at conferences and publishing in journals. The PhD is appropriate for those who want to teach in higher education as well as K–12 teachers wishing to hone their research skills. For those wanting to pursue higher education, we recommend asking about our Teaching Assistantships, which provide first-hand experience in teaching undergraduate students and developing undergraduate curricula.
