What Is Agriculture and Natural Resources?

Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) is a program area of the Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service. Extension ANR programs are part of the outreach program of the University Of Kentucky College Of Agriculture. We provide informal education in agricultural production and environmental stewardship.

Departmental specialists, researchers, and county agents develop and implement ANR programs. In addition to production agriculture, a small staff of Extension Associates provides focused assistance to state and county staff on interdisciplinary and critical-need programs. These programs may deal with the interface between production agriculture and environmental stewardship. Associates also address the relationship between farmers and non-farm rural and urban citizens. Our programs make a difference in the lives of millions of Kentuckians through research-based education.

Working with our other land grant partner, Kentucky State University, we extend the resources of the University to the people in their local communities. County agents serve as the link between people in every Kentucky county and experts in the universities. They coordinate and provide educational programs for the public through meetings and workshops, field days, personal communications, and web or satellite broadcasts. Agents also provide publications, newsletters, computer programs, videos, and other educational materials.

Happy August All,

We have several great educational programs coming up over the next few months.  Please check out the flyers in this Newsletter for more info on each.
The Buffalo Trace Counties will be hosting a Lime & Fertilizer Study Field Day on September 10 at the old Hay Auction building in Lewisburg.  Earlier this year we began work on several research plots to see comparisons of different scenarios of lime and fertilizer applications.  It will be a great time to look at the differences in fertilizer vs no fertilizer and lime vs no lime.  Dr. Ray Smith will be our guest speaker.  We also plan to have 2 or 3 no-till drills on-hand to do a calibration session.  The event does qualify for CAIP education and is also a great way to go ahead and learn or get a refresh on how to calibrate, which will be a requirement for the Fleming County shared-use no-till drill when the county gets it in.

Happy June All,

As I am writing this note to you, the weather is fantastic.  A nice cool morning with lots of sun.  May 2024 went in the books as being one of the top 10 wettest on record.  As a state we ended the month almost 3 inches above average for rainfall.  I know many folks were delayed getting their first cuttings of hay in due to the timing and amounts of rain we received.  We had to delay our Hay Quality Production Field Day twice.  A new date is still to be determined.
We are working on planning our Fall educational classes and should have information rolling out soon on those.  In the mean-while if you have questions, or suggestions for programming, please let us know!
