Begun around 1886 according to Adrienne Fried Block, Amy Beach, Passionate Victorian: The Life and Work of an American Composer, p.64. Completed in 1889 (the vocal and choral parts in 1886 and 1887, the orchestral score in 1889) also according to Block (according to Clara Cheney). Also, in the premiere, the work contained a sixth section, a Gradual(e) by Beach setting a proper for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (8 December), sung between the Gloria and the Credo; this was published separately somewhat later.
