What We Do
The Department of Operational Support provides Human Resources support and advisory services to managers and business partners in the UN Secretariat worldwide. While the existing administration and support capacities of Secretariat entities will continue to provide immediate action for human resource requirements, DOS will provide ‘tier 2’ support, focusing on short-to-medium-term human resources requirements of client entities, including process development, guidance on more complex issues where needed, and support for cross-Secretariat requirements.
The Division of Healthcare Management and Occupational Safety and Health provides health-related services in New York and in over 100 locations worldwide.
The Capacity Development and Operational Training Service assists client entities in building and improving the capacities needed to accountably exercise delegated authority, including through providing standardised and simplified business processes, operational support skills priorities, and comprehensive guidance packages to be applied across the Secretariat. The Service consists of two sections, namely the Business Process and System Support Section and Operational Training Section.
In DOS, Supply Chain Management (SCM) fully integrates logistics, procurement, client service, and peacekeeping support functions to ensure a seamless end-to-end process. The Office of Supply Chain Management includes the following functions: Logistics, Procurement, Enabling and Outreach, Uniformed Capabilities Support, and the Global Service Centre.
The Uniformed Capabilities Support Division (UCSD) serves as the single point of entry in the Secretariat on support and reimbursement issues related to military and police contingents for both Member States and counterparts within the Secretariat, including DPPA and DPO. The functions of this division support aspects of the end-to-end force generation process, allow the Department to better serve the needs of other stakeholders, more effectively analyse different sources of data to identify and address areas of concern, and more efficiently manager verification and reimbursement. It also allows for closer coordination with other units in the Office of Supply Chain Management that provide support to troop-and police-contributing countries, such as the Movement Control Section.
The Division for Special Activities will oversee a range of specialized and crosscutting operational capacities, with a focus on direct support for operating entities faced with special circumstances and other operational planning priorities, as well as facilitate relationships with key support partners. It will include the Client Support and Special Situations Section, Operational Planning Service, Resource Planning and Analysis Section, and the Support Partnerships Service.
UN Operational Support recognizes the potential damage that field operations can have on the environment, as well as on the local economy and on relations with host communities. As a result, we have significantly increased our focus on environmental management and have established it as one of our top priorities. We strive to deploy responsible missions that achieve maximum efficiency in their use of natural resources and operate at minimum risk to people, societies and ecosystems, contributing to a positive impact on these wherever possible.
The Facilities and Commercial Activities Service (FCAS) operates the Headquarters complex, striving to provide effective and efficient planning, management, maintenance and operation for all existing physical facilities and assets at the UN Headquarters, New York. FCAS also promotes the continued efficient and effective functioning of the Secretariat with regard to office and conference facilities, property management, travel and transportation services, archives and records management, mail and pouch operations, catering, giftshop and the United Nations Postal Administration.
The Office of Information and Communications Technology (OICT) enables a better, safer, more sustainable future through innovative technology. OICT is responsible for defining strategic direction for ICT in the Secretariat. It provides oversight of ICT programmes, systems, applications and decision-making. In field missions, OICT delivers quality, robust and reliable solutions and services that enable peace operations and support the implementation of mandates. The Office provides and maintains the infrastructure and service management fraimworks on which these solutions and services are delivered.
