Thunder Bay International Film Festival

Get your tickets starting in December!
January 22-26, 2025

Every year Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary brings the world of cinema to Alpena! In January, northeast Michigan is treated to some of the most impressive ocean and Great Lakes films from around the world. Film screenings are complemented by social events, educational activities, and opportunities to meet filmmakers. See a trailer of one of this year’s feature films “All Too Clear” by clicking here! More than 30 films will be shared over the weekend in three different locations.

Student Shorts Competition

The Thunder Bay International Film Festival wants to know what life in the Great Lakes means to you…share your vision with us on the big screen! Open to students in grades 6 – 12th. Submit a short film, 3 minutes or less. No entry fee. Prizes for the top three shorts.

Selected entries will be shown at the festival on Saturday, January 25 at 3pm. Learn more here.


MATE Great Lakes - Michigan Regional ROV Competition

Excite students with marine technology! Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary supports the Great Lakes – Michigan regional MATE ROV Competition event at the visitor center in Alpena, Michigan.  Students may move on from any of the 42 regional competitions to the MATE World Championship.

Thunder Bay Maritime Festival

Bring the whole family to this free annual community event hosted by the Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary. Since 2001, the sanctuary has encouraged visitors to dive deeper into the maritime world at this celebration of all things nautical. Watch the annual Cardboard Boat Regatta in the river or enter with your own team! Enjoy live music on the main stage, kids activities and crafts, taste some local whitefish, explore the exhibits, and more. Annual Get Into Your Sanctuary
